The Catalina Foothills High School chess team won first place at the Arizona Interscholastic Association State Chess Championship this weekend for the third year in a row.
The team from Salpointe Catholic High School ended the tournament in second place.
"This is the first year in recent memory that two Tucson schools took the top spots," said Catalina Foothills High School's chess coach, Robby Adamson.
It was Salpointe Catholic High School's strongest finish in the tournament, said that team's coach, Jonathan Shacter.
Sixteen Arizona schools competed in the tournament Friday and Saturday.
The Foothills team entered the tournament with high aspirations, Adamson said.
"It's a tournament we expect to win," he said.
