A Tucson woman who was slow to react when her medically fragile child lost one-third of his body weight was placed on 10 years’ probation and given a stern warning from the judge Thursday.
“If I put you on probation and you continue on the path you’re on, you are going to go to prison,” Pima County Superior Court Judge Richard Fields told Ashley Kammerer, 23.
The judge also remarked that if Kammerer knows she’s not going to successfully complete probation she might just want to go to prison now.
Kammerer insisted she is going to make it on probation.
Kammerer acknowledged last October that she failed to provide necessary nutrition to her then -23-month-old son during a two-month period last summer. She pleaded guilty to one count of child abuse under circumstances likely to cause death or serious physical injury.

Under the terms of her plea agreement, Fields could have sent Kammerer to between five and 15 years in prison. In addition to placing her on probation, he also ordered her to serve 30 days in jail.
