Sheriff's department to hand out 1,000 backpacks Saturday

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department will be distributing 1,000 backpacks filled with school supplies Saturday at the Tucson Convention Center, 260 S. Church Ave.

The free backpacks will be given out while supplies last. The event’s hours are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Copper Ballroom.

The sheriff’s department said doors will open at 10 a.m. and there will be no lining up inside the TCC before the doors open. People arriving early for the Badges and Backpacks back-to-school event will have to wait outside.

One backpack per child will be distributed. The child does not have to live in Tucson to receive the backpack.

Free parking will be available in Lot B at the TCC.

McGruff the crime-fighting dog will attend. officials will also be doing free child fingerprinting, and officers from the department’s specialty units will also be at the event. Children can get their photos taken with a sheriff’s K-9 unit. Free Eegee’s will be available while supplies last.

In addition to the sheriff’s department, the event is sponsored by the Pima County Attorney’s Office, Tucson Electric Power, Eegee’s, The Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 20 and My 92.9 Cares for Kids.
