Elks become elves,
buying gifts for kids

Christmas came early for nearly four dozen Marana and Flowing Wells school district students Saturday.

The kindergarten through sixth-graders, from Roadrunner and Laguna elementary schools, were treated to shopping sprees and holiday parties. The Catalina Mountain Elks Lodge #2815 and Casas Adobes Elks Lodge #2663 made the events possible, buying clothing and shoes for kids.

Gale School adoption workday is postponed

Due to the rain over the weekend, the Adopt-a-School workday at Gale Elementary School had to be rescheduled for Jan. 10.

The Adopt-a-School program brings together Tucson Unified School District leadership, parents and community members to take on projects.

Work at Gale, 678 S. Gollob Road, will include:

  • Painting a four-square game.
  • Painting parking stops.
  • Cleaning up the garden.
  • Picking up the grounds.

Financial support and tool donations are welcome for the Adopt-a-School project. To make a contribution, call the Educational Enrichment Foundation at 325-8688.

$20M in federal funds
to aid Ariz. preschools

The Arizona Department of Education has been awarded $20 million in federal funds as part of the 2014 Preschool Development Grant program.

The funds will be used to make preschool programs more readily available to thousands of children in 15 high-needs communities.

The additional funding will specifically target Arizona’s English-language learners and students living in low-income households.

Funds will also be used to support Quality First, Arizona’s multitiered rating and improvement system.
