With the start of the school year, parents have grown accustomed to requests for paper, pencils, tissue and other supplies. But thanks to vandals, Oyama Elementary has added a new playground to its wish list.
The southwest-side playground that serves preschoolers and kindergartners was set on fire Monday night.
What remained of the structure was ripped out Wednesday morning — just days before classes resume Aug. 6.
Equipment from closed TUSD schools will be taken to Oyama, 2700 S. La Cholla Boulevard, until the damaged equipment can be replaced.
The Tucson Unified School District has a $200,000 deductible on its insurance policy, so would need to pay out-of-pocket to replace the equipment, worth about $20,000. With limited resources, TUSD has turned to the community for donations.
