Rather than raise rates to cover a looming budget deficit, Pima County will cut hours at two rural transfer stations.
Beginning in August, the Ryan Field and Catalina transfer stations will be open just four days a week, rather than seven. The stations will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Thursday through Sunday.
The reduction in service will save the county $150,000 a year.
The Ryan Field Transfer Station still will be free.
Rates for Pima County residents will stay at $2 per car and $5 per truck at Catalina. However, workers will start checking license plates and charge non-county residents a $20 fee.
Also, the surcharge for uncovered loads will go up from $5 to $10.
The fee increases won't go into effect until after the Board of Supervisors approves an ordinance change. That could take several weeks.

Also, Pima County plans to restart the green waste program at the Catalina station. The program had been discontinued last December, but will be reinstated from February to July at the request of the Golder Ranch Fire District and area residents.
