Tucson's first all-mail general election could top its best-ever city election turnout - about 41 percent in 1999.
By Thursday, 30 percent of voters had returned ballots - 31,000 Democrats, 20,000 Republicans and 13,100 independents.
In the race for mayor, Democratic attorney Jonathan Rothschild faces Republican business consultant Rick Grinnell and Green Party challenger Mary DeCamp.
Democratic incumbent Regina Romero in Ward 1 faces Green Party hopeful Beryl Baker. In Ward 2, Democrat Paul Cunningham, appointed to his seat in 2010, faces Republican Jennifer Rawson. In Ward 4, Shirley Scott is defending her 16-year record against Republican engineer Tyler Vogt.

Don't, since any ballots that aren't in the office by Tuesday at the close of polls won't be counted.

Instead, drop off your ballot at the city clerk's election center, 800 E. 12th St., south of Broadway and east of Euclid behind the Office Max, or bring it to one of the six other voting locations that will be open on Tuesday from 6 a.m. until 7 p.m.

can I vote in person?
Yes. You can bring your ballot to vote in person, or sign an affidavit saying you lost it or didn't receive one, and you'll get a replacement.
Voters will not be asked to bring identification with them since the ballots submitted at the walk-up locations are treated like any other mail-in ballot. Signatures will be verified by the county recorder.
When will we know Who won?
All-mail balloting puts an end to some of the drama of election night. There will be just one release of numbers, around 8 p.m.
Anything that comes to the office in the mail on Tuesday or at the voting locations on Election Day will not be counted in that initial count, since signatures must be verified first.
