Political Notebook: International intrigue spices CD 2 race

In the heat of a pitched election campaign, Republican Congressional District 2 candidate Martha McSally is going on a fishing expedition — in Mexico no less.

Like thousands of other Arizonans, Rep. Ron Barber owns a time share in Mexico. But the Tucson congressman initially neglected to include it on his personal financial statement.

Based on that missing entry, McSally concludes her Democratic rival must be making money on his one-eighth share and wants Barber to pony up evidence of what she hopes will be the catch of the day.

She wants him to hand over his tax records, which he is, of course, under no obligation to do.

As bait, McSally is offering to release her own tax records for the last three years, saying she has nothing to hide.

A spokesperson for the Barber campaign said the congressman has already publicly stated he doesn’t make any money from the time share, estimated to be worth $140,000.

Coming soon: even more ads

Another Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit agency has announced it will be pouring $1.75 million into local congressional races, virtually eliminating any chance that a commercial break won’t include at least one political ad.

The American Action Network has announced it will spend $1 million in ads next month targeting Democrat Ann Kirkpatrick in Congressional District 1 and another $750,00 in negative ads attempting to defeat incumbent Democrat Ron Barber in CD2.

A representative for the right-leaning group said it is trying to balance the scales in terms of spending, arguing that its analysis shows Democratic groups and campaigns are expected to outspend Republican groups in the finals weeks of the two hotly contested congressional campaigns.

The $1.75 million figure doesn’t completely close the gap — the American Action Network said it expects Democrats will spend an estimated $7.4 million in CD1 and CD2, but Republicans will spend $5.4 million on the same two races.

The network is expected to spend at least $8 million in nice races throughout the county.

Debates are coming

Next week will be the only opportunity — at least at this point — for Baja Arizonans to see Doug Ducey and Fred DuVal debate live here in the Old Pueblo.

The two gubernatorial candidates have agreed to square off next week at the Jewish Community Center, 3800 E. River Road. The debate starts next Thursday at 8 p.m.

DuVal had proposed a total of nine debates. Ducey has agreed to five, but most are at venues to the north.

In Congressional District 2, the McSally and Barber camps have found middle ground — agreeing to three debates in the coming weeks.

Barber had initially proposed two debates, and McSally countered with a proposal for four debates.

The League of Women Voters of Greater Tucson and KVOA News 4 will host a debate on Sept. 28 at 1:30 p.m. Arizona Public Media will host another debate on Oct. 3 at 1:30 p.m.

Both Tucson events will be in the studios of the respective television stations, with no live public audience, only television viewing.

The Sierra Vista Chamber of Commerce and The Sierra Vista Herald will have another debate at Buena High School, tentatively scheduled for Oct. 6 at 6 p.m.
