Girls' basketball fans were on the edge of their seats as their teams competed last week in the Flowing Wells Holiday Shoot Out at Flowing Wells High School, 3725 N. Flowing Wells Road.

The two-day, 36-game tournament on Dec. 27 and 28 has been a tradition at Flowing Wells for 19 years.

"It's a lot of basketball," said Flowing Wells Athletic Director Pat Weber. "It's a nice break in the holiday. The players don't have to worry about school, and they can just play."

Players took it easy in the bleachers between games talking with teammates or listening to music through their headphones.

"The competition is different," said Sunnyside senior forward Zaira Bautista. "We are playing teams we don't normally play. It helps us prepare more for the season when it starts up again."

A group of Palo Verde fans applauded loudly as their team tied with Tucson High in the second half of the game. "We love the whole team," said Theresa Perez, 17, a Palo Verde student. "We go to every single game. We haven't missed one yet this season."
