Beatrice passed away peacefully on June 17, 2018. She was born August 6, 1923 to Altagracia Leyva and Fountain P. Stitt in Bisbee, AZ. She graduated from Bisbee High School and attended Covenant Presbyterian Church (which her father helped build) throughout her young life. She came from a true pioneer family with beginnings on Slaughter's Ranch with Indian raids when Arizona was still a territory. She was a resident of Tucson for over 66 years. Bea worked at the U of A Women's Athletic Dept., as a retail clerk at Korbys Department store and spent many years as a teacher's aide in numerous TUSD elementary schools. Her volunteer work included Meals on Wheels, Church community activities, and transportation for the elderly. She was preceded in death by her husband (Ralph Hartley Sr.) and seven siblings. Beatrice is survived by her three children, Carol Clark (Wayne) of California, Ralph Jr. (Michelle) of Tucson, and Karen Christiansen (Murray) of Tucson. She also leaves behind six grandchildren, Rene' Hinz of Phoenix, Brian and Darin Clark of California, Chad Hartley of Michigan, Colt Barrins and Alex Cline both of Tucson. Eleven great-grandchildren survive her ranging in ages 16 months to 19 years old. She will be missed by family where her kitchen and cooking was always the center of family gatherings. Services and Celebration will be held at Northminster Presbyterian Church-2450 E. Ft. Lowell-on Saturday, July 7, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. Pastor Andy Ross will officiate. In lieu of flowers, please support the Southern Arizona Food Bank in her honor. The family is most grateful for both Pathways Hospice and staff at Brookdale North where she resided the past ten years. Arrangements by DESERT ROSE/HEATHER.

95, of Tucson, AZ, died on June 17, 2018. He is survived by his loving wife of 73 years, Verneda Toothman King; his daughter, Sandra King (Butch) Ruhl; his granddaughter, Christine King (David) Stierna; step-grandchildren, Amy Ruhl and Andy (Kelly) Ruhl; great-grandchildren, Rayne and Alaric Stierna; and step-great-grandchildren, Bailey and Christopher Weitekamp and Lucy and Amelia Ruhl. He is predeceased by his son, Lloyd Howard (Suzanne) King. He was born to Eli W. and Violet George King on September 8, 1922, in Monongahela, PA. After graduating from high school in 1941, Howard enlisted in the Army and served as a staff sergeant with the 1st U.S. Infantry Division. He took part in the North African and Sicilian campaigns before landing on Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944, and fighting through France, Belgium and Germany. For his service he was awarded the Bronze Star, two Purple Hearts, and the French Legion of Honor Medal. He received a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the Univ. of Pittsburgh in 1950 but worked primarily as a mining engineer. In 1961 he left his work with coal mines in Pennsylvania and West Virginia to move his family to Tucson. His career in designing and constructing coal, copper, and gold mines; managing large scale projects; and consulting took him to remote but interesting parts of the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Iran, Brazil, Paraguay and China, but he always returned to Tucson. Besides his work, he enjoyed the outdoors, flying planes and studying history. His family and his many friends loved him for his generosity, sense of humor, and ability to tell great stories. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. A private Memorial Service is planned for a later date. Arrangements by EVERGREEN MORTUARY.

Liz passed away peacefully with her daughters by her side on June 20, 2018 in Scottsdale, Arizona. She was 88. Liz was born in Fayette, Missouri to Beverly Allen and Florence (Miller) Dye. She graduated from Springfield Illinois High School and received her BS in teaching from Illinois State Normal University in 1952. On December 25, 1951, she married Robert Edgar Lesher, in Normal, Illinois at the United Methodist Church where they met at a church social. They began raising their three loving daughters in Normal. They moved from Normal to Homewood, Illinois in 1964 where Liz continued to teach in the Glenwood Public Schools. In 1974 they moved to Mundelein where Liz taught in the Wheeling Public Schools. After 30 plus years of teaching, she retired in 1986. Liz and Bob moved to Tucson, Arizona in 1991 to enjoy retirement. After a long and happy marriage Bob passed away in 1996. On a church choir tour to Scotland and England Liz met Edwin "Ned" Boardman. She married Ned in 1998 and they enjoyed 18 years together before his passing in 2017. Some of Liz's favorite things were playing bridge, bowling, teaching, Friday night fish fries, traveling, dinner with friends, hot fudge sundaes at Marshall Field's Walnut Room, cooking 'tasty' meals for Bob, playing bridge, visiting Hawaii, drinking frozen daiquiris, baking pecan pies from scratch, making oyster stuffing at Thanksgiving, eating Frango mints, drinking chocolate martinis and playing bridge. Liz is survived by her three daughters, Susan Lesher McAnneny (Larry) of Somerville, MA, Mary Lesher Dokes (Gary) of Scottsdale, AZ, Janet Lesher Kaneda (Glenn) of Kaneohe, HI. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Patrick McAnneny of Somerville, MA, Kathleen McAnneny of Boston, MA, Philip Dokes, of Tempe, AZ, Megan Kaneda (Jason) of San Diego, CA, and Elizabeth Cerussi (Matt) of El Segundo, CA and great-grandchildren, Eleanor Ross of San Diego, CA and Theodore Cerussi of El Segundo, CA. A Memorial Service / Interment will take place at East Lawn Memorial Gardens, Bloomington, Illinois in the fall of 2018. A Union of Ashes Ceremony will be held on Oahu, Hawaii in the spring of 2019 to unite Liz and Bob eternally. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Liz's name to Hospice of the Valley at www.hov.org. Also, her family feels, Liz would be grateful for any acts of kindness performed toward a public school teacher. Arrangements by HANSEN MORTUARY SCOTTSDALE.

81, Tucson native, died June 20, 2018. Preceded in death by his parents Guillermo and Mercedes Maytorena and sister, Elizabeth. Survived by his wife Maria Elena; son, Guillermo; sisters, Sally (Joe), Frances (Ernest) and Sylvia (Michael). He was a social worker at El Rio Community Health Center and The Children's Clinic for Rehab Services and spent his life helping others. His kindness, compassion and love for everyone had no bounds. Thank you to Casa de la Luz for their care and kindness during Bill's final days. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to El Rio Community Health Center and The Children's Clinic for Rehab Services. Passed away peacefully in Tucson, meeting her husband and love of her life, Thomas A. Mellars, in heaven. Also preceded in death by her parents Mary (Szawyra) and Steven Lemko; three brothers, four sisters, and her sons, William J. (1975) and Thomas R. Mellars (1985). Lena is survived by children, Michele (Mellars) Peard and husband John, Patricia, Maryann and Robert; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Lena will be joining Tom at Arlington Cemetery later this year. Still loved, still missed and forever very dear.

She enjoyed nothing more than spending time with her family, dancing, live music and a good, cold Bud. She loved to laugh and was always up for anything. He is survived by his mother; his two sons, Rhyasin Roebuck and Jason Derrick Peebles Jr, both of Tucson; his brother, Jarrod, of Lynnwood, WA; two sisters, Charisse Sam (née Peebles) of Kent, WA, and Alexa Robb, of Greenwood, IN. Author, editor, publisher, columnist and life long Arizonan William R. "Bill" Quimby has died in Tucson on June 20, 2018 at the age of 81. From 1967 to 1994, Mr. Quimby was the Tucson Citizen's outdoor editor and a member of its editorial board from 1987 to 1994. From 1983 to 1999 he also edited and published the bi-monthly "Safari" and "Safari Cub" magazines, the annual SCI Record Books of Trophy Animals, and the monthly "Safari Times" and "Safari Times Africa" newspapers in the United States and South Africa for Safari Club International. When he was born at his parents' home on Jerry Blvd. just off East Speedway near Swan Road on September 30, 1936, his birth certificate said he had been "born three miles east of Tucson in Pima County." Mr. Quimby attended schools in Yuma before returning to Tucson in 1954 to enroll in the University of Arizona's College of Business and Public Administration. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Marketing, he was employed in the advertising divisions of Levy's and Jacome's department stores, and at local advertising and public relations agencies. He founded and published Arizona Outdoor News, a regional newspaper covering Arizona's hunting and fishing opportunities, for three years in the 1960s. He was a founding member of the Tucson Art Directors Club and southern Arizona chapters of Ducks Unlimited and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. He also served as the 1990 president of the One Shot Antelope Hunt's Past Shooters Club in Lander, Wyoming. During the 1960s, he won several metalicas siluetaslong-distance, high-power rifle shooting contestsin Sonora, Mexico. In 1973, the Arizona Wildlife Federation presented Mr. Quimby the Conservation Communicator of the Year award for "outstanding contributions to the wise use and management of the nation's natural resources." In the 1980s, he served as a member of a governor's panel that advised the Arizona Game and Fish Department on fund-raising methods. After retiring in 1999, he divided his time between his home in Tucson and a cabin in Greer, and wrote or edited more than two dozen books on international big game hunting subjects. One of his books, "Royal Quest, " told about the hunting expeditions of Prince Abdorreza Pahlavi, brother of the last Shah of Iran. Another of his books chronicled the history of Safari Club International. His own memoirs, "Sixty Years A Hunter," was published in 2010. Mr. Quimby received numerous awards as a reporter, columnist, editor and publisher and, in 2003, he became one of only three authors to be presented the Peter Hathaway Capstick International Literary Award, the highest award a hunting and adventure author can receive. He was inducted into the Arizona Outdoor Hall of Fame in 2006. Mr. Quimby hunted in North America, Europe, Africa, Asia, South America and the South Pacific, taking more than 60 different types of big game animals, including all ten species found in Arizona. Utilizing his knowledge of hunting in Africa he moderated Safari Club International's popular "Your First African Safari" seminars for nearly 25 years at the club's annual conventions in Nevada. He is survived by Jean, his wife of more than 62 years, daughter, Stephanie Quimby-Greene of Tucson; and grandchildren, Natalie Greene of San Francisco, and Logan Greene of Tucson. A Memorial Service is planned on Saturday, August 11, 2018 at River Lake in Greer Arizona.

78, passed away June 26, 2018. He is survived by his son, Craig; daughter, Shelley McLaughlin; son-in-law, Patrick McLaughlin; grandchildren, Eilise and Charles McLaughlin; three siblings, six siblings-in-laws and many wonderful nieces and nephews. Tom was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Dan; sister, Jean and loving wife Freeda. Tom spent his youth in Greeley, Colorado as an avid fisherman and drummer in a local dance band. He graduated from Northern Colorado University with a Masters in Education before moving to Tucson. He taught industrial arts at Alice Vail Middle School for 34 years. Upon retiring, he and Freeda doted on their grandchildren, cheered for the Wildcats and traveled the world with many dear friends; seeing everything from the glaciers of Alaska, the Panama Canal, Red Square to the Great Wall of China. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 3, 2018 at Bring's on Broadway. Larry Rice passed away June 27, 2018 at age 86. Larry was born September 8, 1931, to Lawrence E., and Mable (Prentice) Rice, in Warren, Ohio. After graduating from Warren G. Harding High School, Larry served in the Coast Guard in Oregon from 1950-1953. Larry married Jean Totten in 1953, and worked as the Urban Renewal and Planning Director for the city of Warren until moving to Oregon in 1965. Larry's professional career included: Executive Director of Lane Council of Governments, Executive Director of the Columbia Region Association of Governments in Portland, OR, Public Works Director of Washington County in Beaverton, OR, and later in Deschutes County, Bend, OR. After his retirement in 1997, Larry and Jean moved from Oregon to Tucson, AZ. Jean's passed away in 2013 after 60 years of marriage. Larry then moved to the Seattle, WA area to be near his daughters. He is survived by five children, Jyl, Holly, Larry J, Amy, and Jennifer; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Jack D. Root Sr., 95, of Tucson, Arizona, died peacefully on May 27, 2018, surrounded by family at Peppi's HouseTMC Hospice. Jack was born in Sterling, Illinois to James and Edith Root on November 11, 1922, the youngest of five siblings who predeceased him. He is survived by daughter, Diane M. Root (Randolph) of Tucson, AZ, and son, Jack D. Root, Jr. (Ms. Isis) of Tucson, AZ, as well as five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Jack attended school in West Chicago, Illinois, and enlisted in the Army Air Corps after high school. His specialty in WWII was targeted radar, a relatively new military tool. He met Ruth M. Falconer in Washington D.C., and they married eight weeks later on October 27, 1944. Their great love sustained them until Ruth's death in 2017. A week after they married, Jack deployed to Italy, relocating to Illinois after his discharge in 1946. Once home, Jack attended Illinois Institute of Technology, earning an Electrical Engineering degree. He worked for IBM for 33 years, retiring as a Sr. Manager in technical writing. Jack was a prolific story teller, bestower of nicknames, and wry humorist. After retirement, he and Ruth became lifetime members in the Oregon- California Trails Association, and founded the AZ chapter (now merged with the Southern Trails chapter). Jack was an explorer and learner his entire life. His near photographic memory was legendary; family and friends knew who to ask about nearly everything. Jack and Ruth golfed (Hole in One Club), hiked, camped, and rafted the Grand Canyon twice, the last time in their 70's. They traveled to all 50 states and Europe more than once, soaking in local culture and history. Jack D. Root, Sr. was an incomparable member of the Greatest Generation. He is profoundly loved and missed. Jack's family extends their sincere thanks to Dr. Roy Loewenstein and staff at Arizona Community Physicians, his loving caregivers, Peppi's House Hospice, and all the loving extended family and friends who enriched his life over the years. Donations in Jack's name may be made to Peppi's House TMC Hospice. Private services will be held at a later date. Arrangements by BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL.

went home to be with God and his Savior on June 11, 2018. He was born at Nanticoke, PA, on April 17, 1924. Eugene served in the U.S. Navy from 1942-1945 in the Pacific Theater as an aircrewman with VT-5 aboard the USS Yorktown, "The Fighting Lady." He earned degrees in education, administration and counseling at Bowling Green State University in Ohio, ASU, and UA. Eugene was a teacher and counselor in TUSD for many years. A devout Christian he was involved in church activities at Fountain of Life and Ascension Lutheran Churches. He was active with the Tucson Wilmot Lions (30 year life member) and the Tucson Education Association. Preceded in death by wife, Barbara Scott. Survived by children, Susan Reavis (Bob), Janice Truitt (Jim), Alan Scott (Martine); grandchildren, Kevin (Lindsey) and Kimberly Truitt, Jaimie and Peyton Reavis, Colette and Daniel Scott; great-grandson, Jayson Eugene Truitt; brother, Walter Scott and several nieces and nephews. Memorial Service will be at Ascension Lutheran Church on Saturday, July 7, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. Private burial will be at East Lawn with military honors. passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 at the age of 83. Margaret was a beautiful and strong loving wife, mother, and grandmother, loved by her husband of 59 years, Roger, and her children, Mark (Anne), Greg (Kelly), Jeff, Susan (Chris), LeeAnn (Michael), and Eric (Lisa), and her 12 grandchildren. A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, July 7, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 1800 N Camino Pio Decimo in Tucson, Arizona, followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to any local Tucson charity.

Elsa will be lovingly remembered by her husband Rob of 66 years and her children, Bob, Mark (Bree), Nancy (Greg), John-Paul; three grandchildren, Cheyenne, Samantha (Andrew) , Jackson and one great-grandchild, Wyatt.
