World War II veteran, Walter Ram, was presented with the Purple Heart by U.S. Senator Martha McSally (R-AZ) during a ceremony at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 20, 2019. Ram enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps at age 16. He worked at a B-17E radio operator and gunner. While on his sixth bombing mission in Europe, Ram and the rest of his aircrew were shot down and imprisoned in Stalag 17B, a notorious German POW Camp. He was imprisoned at the camp for nearly two years before being evacuated.
