Re: the April 14 guest column "Local officers quietly carrying out their duties while saving lives."
Thank you, Michael Storie. It was refreshing to read from the perspective of the officer when and if lethal force is used against a perpetrator. Officers give every offender an opportunity to surrender without force. However, in the face of concealed weapons and drug affected offenders, it is the responsibility of law enforcement to carry out the role in which they swore to uphold.
As the mother of an officer, I pray that if confronted with the situations you describe, he would use the judgment and training he has been given. I know for a fact that these situations stay with officers. They are not heartless. Their families are always mindful of the risks involved and whether they will be able to quietly come home at the end of a shift.
