Re: the April 16 article "Former first lady Barbara Bush in poor health, opts for 'comfort care.'"

"I am going to beat this thing and I will make a full recovery" is a comment we often hear. An admirable feeling that sometimes is not realistic. Life is full of trials and tribulations, and the strong must rise to the challenge. It might take greater wisdom and courage to understand that one cannot always win, there is a time to stop fighting, and that victory takes another form.

Years ago I retired as a hospice nurse. I found that many people experienced peace when they accepted their own mortality. They then were able to spend their remaining time "smelling the roses" and hugging their grandchildren. One thing to learn from hospice can be acceptance. Thank you, Mrs. Bush, for reminding us that victory can come in different forms.
