If Republicans believe in their tax bill, why do they feel the need to lie about it? Eating cake may goose my metabolism with a sugar high, but it won’t drop my weight back to high-school athlete level. Slashing income won’t balance the federal budget either. If that worked, we could eliminate federal taxes and have budget surpluses as far as the eye can see.

The conservative Chicago Booth School of economics asked 38 people who think about this for a living whether slashing $1.4 trillion in revenue would result in higher debt. Not surprisingly, 37 said "of course it will." When the contrarian was asked about the dissent, he replied "I didn’t understand the question. Of course it will." When a salesman lies about the fundamental nature of his product, it’s because he assumes you’d hate the fundamental nature of his product.
