The Pima County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution Tuesday to assess its options in challenging a state statute that preempts local gun control laws.
OPINION: "As Arizona counties are charged under state law with protecting public health, our Board of Supervisors should have the ability to protect residents from public health and safety threats. Sadly, the Arizona Legislature restricts our capacity to fulfill that duty," writes Pima County Supervisor Rex Scott.
OPINION: "In this first year, PEEPs helped close to 700 children who might have missed out on preschool otherwise. Think of what that opportunity means for these kids and their futures! For their families and their peace of mind! For our community and its future! In the years to come, even more children will be served," writes Pima County Supervisor Rex Scott.
Jan Lesher will earn $260,000 a year, about $32,000 less than Chuck Huckelberry, who retired last year but worked on a contract basis without supervisors knowing.
OPINION: "Actions have consequences, and it is apparent that all parties involved here did not consider the extent to which Chuck’s change in employment status with the county could have on the various stakeholders involved," writes Tucsonan Thomas Horrigan.
OPINION: "Nothing associated with either his resignation or retirement detracts from the fact that our entire community owes him and his family a sincere debt of gratitude," writes Pima County Supervisor Rex Scott.
The city set aside one of its major demands at Thursday's meeting, while other RTA members voted unanimously to give Tucson more say in critical discussions. Now the RTA has to execute on its promises and craft a plan to fill the city's multi-million-dollar project funding gap.
Only Supervisor Steve Christy voted against giving county workers paid parental leave at 100% of their regular salaries as opposed to the 66% rate paid before.
Pima County's unvaccinated employees have until Dec. 31 to become vaccinated or look for new employment.
Pima County employees who work with vulnerable populations are required to get vaccinated by Jan. 1 or face termination.
OPINION: "We have sad evidence from the pandemic about what can happen when there are competing approaches for dealing with common problems," writes Pima County Supervisor Rex Scott, who represents District 1.
OPINION: "This fair partnership has served our region well, but it will become inequitable if city government decides in April to impose differential water rates on Tucson Water customers who live in certain parts of Pima County," writes Pima County Supervisor Rex Scott.
If approved in the Pima County budget process this May, the $10 million in funding would provide full and partial scholarships to parents who wish to enroll their 3, 4 and 5-year-old child in a high-quality early childhood program.
The winner will represent a district that includes the county's north side, including Oro Valley, Marana, Casa Adobes and the Catalina Foothills.
OPINION: Some of our letter writers are suggesting former Vice President Joe Biden should skip the next debate after being constantly interrupted and thrown off by President Donald Trump.
OPINION: Democratic candidate for Pima County Supervisor, District 1, Rex Scott, asks voters of the district for his support. "Local government, the level closest to the people, should be the least partisan," he writes.
OPINION: Is Joe Biden benefitting from a compliant liberal media? That's the charge made by one of our writers. Check out what others have to say in our Tuesday edition of Letters to the Editor.
OPINION: Our letter writers weigh in on a central question: Is the unrest in American cities emblematic of Donald Trump's or Joe Biden's America? Read these answers and more in our latest Letters to the Editor.
