The NCAA has released a video showing exactly how it intends to carry out the latest rule tweaks pushing for even more freedom of movement this season.
J.D. Collins, the NCAA's national officiating coordinator, explains the new guidelines while a series of video examples are also presented. Among the key areas are cutting down on physical post play, respecting the vertical "cylinder" around both the offensive and defensive players, plus restricted-area and traveling calls.
Too often, Collins says, players aren't called for resetting their feet before shooting, an emphasis that may change. Another interesting point is that if a defender crowds into a ballhandler's "cylinder" (the immediate space in front of him, from shoulders down to feet), and makes a normal move with his arms generally in a vertical position, the defender will be assessed a foul even if he is unintentionally hurt. (However, if the offensive player is "clearing space" with his arms mostly horizontal, he's the one who will be whistled).
