No. 20-ranked Rice scored twice in the eighth inning to beat Arizona and avoid a sweep with a 4-3 win in Houston on Sunday.
UA (2-1) led 3-1 in the seventh before the Owls rallied.
Charlie Warren scored on a sacrifice fly from Ryan Chandler to break the tie in the eighth. Rice had tied the game at 3-3 earlier in the inning with a solo homer by Grayson Lewis.
Alfonso Rivas took the loss for UA. Starter Nathan Bannister allowed two runs in six innings.
Arizona managed just four hits, with two of them by J.J. Matijevic. His bunt single scored Ryan Aguilar in the sixth to put UA up 3-1.
The Wildcats took a 2-0 lead in the second on a fielder’s choice and an error.
Bobby Dalbec went 0 for 4 for Arizona, and hit just .091 in the series.
UA had won the first two games of the series by a combined 14-3. The Wildcats play at Lamar at 5 p.m. on Monday in Beaumont, Texas.
