Nick Johnson's brother joins Wildcats as walk-on

  • Updated

Chris Johnson, the older brother of Arizona guard Nick Johnson, is joining the Wildcats as a walk-on for next season.

Johnson's mother, Michelle Mayland, said today that Nick spearheaded the effort to get his brother on the team. Chris Johnson played for Grand Canyon in 2011-12 and attended but did not play at Cal State San Bernardino last season because of injuries.

He has two remaining seasons of eligibility, the same as Nick.

Chris "is here to get a degree and what better place to get it than at Arizona, playing with his brother," Mayland said.

Chris Johnson moved to Tucson earlier this month, began practicing with the Wildcats and has been cleared by UA and the NCAA, Michelle said. On his first day, Michelle said, he worked out in a small-group drill with Aaron Gordon, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson and Brandon Ashley.

The Wildcats now have five walk-ons for 2013-14: Johnson, guards Trey Mason and Jacob Hazzard, and forwards Eric Conklin and Drew Mellon.
