Over the weekend, UA coach Rich Rodriguez took a trip to New Orleans — but no, it wasn't for a recruiting visit.
Rhett Rodriguez, Rich's son and a 2017 UA commit, was competing in Nike's The Opening Regional camp in NOLA for the chance to picked for Nike's national The Opening event in Beaverton, Ore., taking place in July. Rodriguez wasn't ultimately picked, but he did stand out enough to have a national article mention him.
Bleacher Report's Damon Sayles covered the event, tweeted out a couple of videos and apparently spoke with Rich Rodriguez as well. Scroll down to the third sub-headline for the note about Rhett.
Rhett Rodriguez, a stand-out quarterback for Catalina Foothills, committed to Arizona back in January. Why was he competing at an event in New Orleans?
Well, there's no Nike event in Arizona, which often leads recruits from Arizona to travel out for the event in Los Angeles which took place a couple months ago. Sabino's Drew Dixon drove out to California for that, for example.
For whatever reason, Rodriguez didn't participate in that one, but he does have a connection to Louisiana — he was actually born in New Orleans in 1998 when Rich Rodriguez was the offensive coordinator at Tulane.
