4. Arizona officiating vs. ASU officiating
Whether calculated or not, Arizona and ASU do not draw from the same quality of officiating pool.
The league’s commissioner of officials, Bobby Dibler, assigned the so-called Big Six — Randy McCall, Dave Hall, Dick Cartmell, Mike Reed, Verne Harris and John Higgins — to a total of 19 slots in Arizona conference games.
The Sun Devils got the Big Six for just nine referee openings.
What’s more, Arizona rarely drew one of the new/newer referees Dibler is breaking into the Pac-12. Only two so-called rookie refs worked UA conference games: Brent Meaux and Marc Beasley.
By comparison, the Sun Devils had 10 unfamiliar faces who are working their way up the league ladder: D.G. Nelson, Rick Hartzell, Rod Dixon, Winston Smith, Randy Heimerman, Casey McClellan, Frank Harvey, Nate Harris, Bert Smith and Gerry Pollard.
