Tournament play is already in full swing this week with the AMSA Lancer Baseball Classic, but the schedule gets a little busier after tonight.
The inaugural D’Eredita Memorial Raven Invitational put on by the Empire baseball team opens up Wednesday afternoon, as does the Badger Invitational, hosted by Tucson High's softball team. Both events run through Saturday.
The D’Eredita Invitational features six teams – Desert Christian, Empire, Flowing Wells, Pusch Ridge Christian, Safford and San Miguel – and honors Lynee Taylor D’Eredita, who died in 2012 after a six-year battle with triple-negative breast cancer. She was the mother of former Empire baseball and football player Adam D’Eredita.
Flowing Wells faces San Miguel in the first game, scheduled for 1 p.m. and Pusch Ridge plays Desert Christian at 4 p.m. Action continues through Saturday, with the championship game scheduled for 3 p.m.
Meanwhile, 13 softball teams will face off at Cherry Field in Tucson High’s Badger Invitational. The first two games are scheduled for Wednesday at 3 p.m., with Cholla playing Sierra Vista Buena and Desert View taking on Empire, the defending Division III state champion.
Catalina Foothills, Casa Grande Vista Grande, Flowing Wells, Pueblo, Rincon/University, Sunnyside and Tucson High are the other teams in the field for the four-day tournament, which concludes with Saturday’s championship game, scheduled for 6 p.m.
Pool play continues Wednesday at the Lancer Baseball Classic, which is being played at the Reid Park Annex. Bracket play opens Thursday and the championship game of the 20-team tournament is scheduled for Friday at 7 p.m.
For track and field fans, the UA-hosted Willie Williams Classic begins Thursday at Drachman Stadium, with events for unseeded athletes. Varsity competition begins Friday and runs through Saturday.
