UA Softball: James Madison no fluke, Cats discover

  • Updated

Arizona's Mo Mercado (11) watches her two run homer clear the fences to make the score 6-0 Wildcats in the third inning against Stanford in their Pac-12 game at Hillenbrand Stadium, Friday, April 24, 2015, Tucson, Ariz. Kelly Presnell / Arizona Daily Star

James Madison proved its lofty ranking is legit at the Wildcat Invitational this weekend.

The No. 10-ranked Dukes finished with a 5-0 record at the event with a 4-2 win over No. 15 Arizona on Sunday.

UA (15-7) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning but was shut out the rest of the way by Jailyn Ford, who improved to 7-0 but saw her ERA rise to 0.99.

Taylor Newton gave James Madison (17-1) the lead for good with a solo homer in the top of the sixth to snap a 2-2 tie.

Mo Mercado had an RBI groundout to put UA up 1-0 in the first, and Alexis Dotson then scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0.

Dotson was 2 for 4 for UA, which stranded 10 runners on base and didn’t have an extra-base hit.

Taylor McQuillin (5-3) took the loss, allowing four runs on eight hits in the complete game.

The Wildcats and Dukes meet again at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Hillenbrand Stadium. UA will then compete in the Texas Arlington Tournament from Friday through Sunday.
