Plant in the ground or in deep pots with plenty of organic amendments.

Plant now through mid-November. That gives the plants a chance to develop their root system over our mild fall and winter.

Choosing the site

Strawberries are usually planted in full sun but that can be a problem here in the summer. They should get morning sun and afternoon shade for best results over the hottest months but will do well in full sun during the winter and spring, says Beth Hargrove of Rillito Nursery and Garden Center.

So plan to give them afternoon shade in the summer or plant in deep pots that you can move into the shade as the season progresses. I have 2 big pots on plant dollies for that reason.

If frost is expected, cover with light bed sheets or frost covers.
