The shelter is still double its capacity and needs even more volunteers, fosters and adopters. To help walk dogs, show up between 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. sign in and a friendly dog will be given to you. If you can’t walk, you can sit with a dog to give them a break from the kennel.
The dogs love field trips! Take one for a car ride, stop for a burger and give them a break from the noisy shelter. Maybe you’ll spot someone interested in giving them a home!
Sadly, the shelter has had a distemper outbreak, putting many dogs at risk. Restrictions are in place to minimize the spread but it is challenging in an old facility with little space and ventilation for isolation. Only dogs in the Green Zone are currently available to walk.
Most dogs come to the shelter unvaccinated, and it takes two-four weeks post initial vaccination and another booster two-four weeks later to establish immunity. Dogs in the shelter in the first eight weeks after an outbreak are most at risk. Your routinely vaccinated pets at home should be well protected. Keep the animals and staff in your thoughts as they navigate through this shelter nightmare.
