In April, SaddleBrooke Men’s Golf Association (SMGA) held its first SaddleBrooke Cup Championship. The Cup is a new tournament patterned after the PGA FedEx points system. Participants in SMGA tournaments gain points based on how many events they participate in and where they finish. As a bonus, all participants are awarded points even if they do not place in the top echelon receiving tournament payouts. At the end of the season (November to April), the top 32 finishers play in a tournament for cash winnings. All participants win a minimum of $40 with the top prize of $200 on the line.

Virgil Manard won the top prize of the inaugural Cup tournament, outlasting the other top qualifiers. Virgil is originally from Dayton, Ohio, eventually moving to St. Paul, Minnesota, where he finished his career as an analytical chemist for the 3M Company. He and his wife of 50+ years moved to SaddleBrooke in 2001. Congratulations Virgil!

The new tournament was proposed by SMGA Board member and Membership Chairman Randy Williams. Randy “borrowed” the SaddleBrooke Cup idea from a club he belonged to in Vancouver, Washington. His stated goal as Membership Chairman, is to encourage as many men as possible to join this great group of guys, that enjoy the game of golf regardless of score and/or handicap.
