Chicago ended 2017 with fewer homicides than the year before but raging gang wars in the city's most violent neighborhoods drove the total beyond the 600 mark for just the second time in well over a decade. Chicago police say there was less gun violence in the city in 2017 compared to the year before. But the total number of homicides still topped 600 for only the second time in more than a decade. Statistics released by police Monday show the homicides fell from 771 in 2016 to 650 in 2017. The shooting incidents dropped from 3,550 to 2,785 for the same period. Police say the drop is partly due to technology that helps pinpoint where shots have been fired.
