LANCASTER, Wis. (AP) — Authorities in Grant County of southwestern Wisconsin are on the lookout for a fugitive — a huge snake.
The greyish-brown snake, believed to be a non-poisonous python, was spotted around 5:30 p.m. Sunday, slithering across Highway 61 in Dickeyville. The sheriff's office says it was "as long as the width of both lanes of traffic."
Sheriff Nate Dreckman has advised parents to keep close watch on small children and pets, and warned people not try to catch the snake. He says snakes that big aren't manageable and can cause injuries.
The sheriff says authorities have a plan in place for catching the snake if it's spotted again, so anyone who sees it should call 911 instead.
Dickeyville snake breeder James Stelpflug says he's skeptical the snake is really that big.
