In August 2016, the federal government released new data showing a sharp rise in car-related fatalities. From 2014 to 2015 there was a 7.2 percent increase in absolute traffic deaths -- the largest single-year increase in 50 years.
While traffic fatalities are up overall, certain areas are more dangerous than others. That's why AxleGeeks, an auto research site powered by Graphiq, decided to find the most dangerous cities in America for drivers.
Using data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, AxleGeeks found the cities throughout the U.S. with the most car fatalities per 100,000 people in 2015. Ties were broken by the total number of fatalities, and only cities with a population greater than 100,000 were considered.
Remarkably, five cities from Florida make the top 10. Other southern states like Texas and South Carolina are well-represented as well. Smaller New England states like Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine are absent entirely. Additionally, major cities like New York, Chicago and Philadelphia don't make the list. This might be due to the fact that people in densely-populated cities take public transportation or walk to work more.
