Two Fort Huachuca soldiers have been indicted on charges they threw out more than 200 pieces of mail taken from the fort’s mail room.
Staff Sgt. Joanna Liberty Yanz, 23 and Private First Class Crystal Lara Wilson-Chambers were charged last week with one count each of conspiracy to commit obstruction of correspondence and aiding and abetting obstruction of correspondence, according to documents filed in U.S. District Court in Tucson.
Sierra Vista police were contacted July 22 by witnesses who said they saw Yanz and Wilson-Chambers throwing mail into a dumpster at Yanz’s off-base apartment complex, court records show.
Police found 213 pieces of mail in the dumpster, 160 of which had Fort Huachuca addresses, court records show.
Police contacted the fort’s U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command on July 24. Military officials interviewed the two women, who admitted to taking the mail and throwing it out, court records show.
