Helen Brown Keeling began teaching school in Arizona in 1911, a year before the territory became a state. She moved to Tucson from Douglas in 1930 and taught first grade at Prince Road Elementary for three years before she was named principal of the Amphitheater School District school. Eventually she was made director of elementary education for the district.
After retiring in 1957, Keeling took over as director of the Beacon Foundation for Mentally Retarded Children, now called the Beacon Group. She retired again in 1967 and died nine years later at the age of 89.
