Pascua is Spanish for Easter.
Easter ceremonies of the Pascua Yaqui Tribe have been a part of Arizona history since the early 1900s. These ceremonies are held during Waehma, the seven-week Lenten season.
The Yaqui are also known as Yoeme, meaning "The People." In Yoeme communities, Lenten ceremonies begin on Ash Wednesday and continue through Easter Sunday. One aspect of this ceremony is the Yaqui interpretation of the Catholic liturgy for the Easter season along with the dramatization of the Passion of Jesus Christ by the Yoeme People.
