FLAGSTAFF — An airplane that appeared to have experienced engine problems crashed about 15 miles south of Flagstaff, killing both people on board.
The single-engine Cessna 205 crashed Friday morning about a half mile west of Interstate 17. The cause of the crash wasn’t known. The plane had left Flagstaff and was headed to Yuma.
A police officer who witnessed the crash heard the plane’s engine sputter and saw the aircraft hit a tree.
A helicopter was used to try to locate the plane, but heavy fog obscured the crew’s vision. The plane was found about 90 minutes after the crash.
The identities of the people on the plane haven’t been released.
The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash.
