Merger facts
● R.J. Reynolds, the second-largest U.S. cigarette company, will purchase Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corp. for $2.6 billion to create a combined company to be called Reynolds American Inc.
l RJR currently sells Camel, Winston, Salem and Doral brands.
l Brown & Williamson sells Kool, Lucky Strike, GPC and Capri brands.
● The purchase will give the resulting company control of about a third of the U.S. cigarette market, second behind Philip Morris USA, which controls about half of the market.
