Surgeon Gollapalli joins staff at Santa Cruz Valley hospital

General surgeon Vinod Gollapalli will join Santa Cruz Valley Regional Hospital’s medical team.

Gollapalli, who has been in practice for more than 18 years, will provide general surgical services, focusing on abdominal treatment, some including esophagus, stomach and colon.

He has been a general surgeon for Banner Health in Tucson and Bronx-Lebanon Hospital in New York. He has also recently been a fill-in general surgeon in Alaska, Arkansas and Globe, Ariz.

Gollapalli has completed fellowships in breast oncological surgery and in abdominal organ transplant surgery, including liver, pancreas, kidney and multivisceral; and a residency in general surgery.

UA Global selects White as its permanent vice provost

UA Global selects White as its permanent vice provost

Brent White, an internationally known legal scholar and international education expert, was named vice provost of UA Global.

In this role, White will guide the University of Arizona’s comprehensive international vision. He will coordinate ongoing efforts to implement the UA’s strategic vision, including making the UA a Top 20 destination for international students, a Top 10 national university for students who study abroad, and a world leader in confronting global challenges.

White will also lead the creation of the UA Global Center, which will serve as one-stop shop for services for international students, faculty and scholars, and will be the hub for international activities on campus.

White has served as interim vice provost since July 2018, when UA Global was created by combining the offices of international education and global initiatives into one unit. White also led a team that developed the first UA micro-campus at Ocean University of China in Qingdao. He will continue to lead this initiative as dean of global campuses and international education.

Reid Clark, a 25-year Tucson commercial banking veteran, is the regional president. He was previously senior vice president and regional manager for Alliance Bank of Arizona and vice president, commercial loans with National Bank of Arizona.

Foothills Bank, a division of Glacier Bank, has expanded into Tucson and named its local lending team.

Joe Snapp is a senior vice president. Snapp has over 22 years of commercial banking experience and has been in Tucson for 16 years. Formerly with National Bank of Arizona, Snapp was most recently senior vice president of commercial real estate for Alliance Bank of Arizona.

Vantage West Appoints Nowak as business relationship manager

Vantage West Credit Union has appointed Teresa Nowak business relationship manager III.

In her new role, she will help foster collaborative relationships with local businesses and communities on behalf of the credit union.

Nowak has 20 years of business banking experience in the local market. She specializes in complex commercial loan requests, as well as relationship management for business owners, C-Suite executives, medical practices, multi-family and not-for-profits.

Before joining Vantage West, Nowak held leadership and commercial banking positions in various financial institutions that include international banks and locally owned community banks.

Podiatrist Gillespie joins Santa Cruz Valley Regional Hospital

Santa Cruz Valley Regional Hospital has added its first on-site podiatrist, Dr. Steven M. Gillespie, to its medical team.

Gillespie will treat foot and ankle issues for patients of all ages. Gillespie received his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine from Des Moines University in 2013 and is a member of the Associate American College of Foot and Ankle Surgery.

He treated patients for three years as a podiatry resident at the Southern Arizona VA Hospital. Most recently he was a practicing podiatrist at Desert Podiatric Medical Specialists.

Dr. Mathias named associate chair of clinical affairs at UA branch

The University of Arizona Department of Family and Community Medicine and Banner – University Medicine have appointed Dr. Ann Mathias as associate chair of clinical affairs.

In her new role, Mathias will oversee the clinical operations for all Banner – University Medicine family medicine clinics and family medicine clinical service lines. She will continue as the family medicine liaison to Banner – University Medicine Multispecialty Clinic at Pantano and Banner – University Medicine Multispecialty Clinic at North Hills and Banner – University Medicine North.

Mathis joined the UA and Banner – University Medicine in 2017 as the medical director of primary care for the Banner – University Medicine Whole Health Clinic. She completed her medical education at Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine and her residency in family medicine at Metropolitan Hospital in Grand Rapids, Mich. She is board certified in family practice.

UA Sonoran Center for Excellence in Disabilities selects director

Wendy Parent-Johnson has joined the University of Arizona Sonoran Center for Excellence in Disabilities as its new director.

Parent-Johnson will lead the UA Sonoran Center, which focuses on the issues of health, wellness, employment and community inclusion for adults with developmental and other disabilities, across the life span.

She previously worked at the University of South Dakota, where Parent-Johnson was a professor in the Department of Pediatrics, served as the executive director for the Center for Disabilities and was director of the university’s Leadership Education in Neuromuscular Disabilities program.

Jeff Zyla has been named Carondelet Health Network’s chief financial officer.

He will serve as a key member of the senior management team providing input for strategic planning, growth opportunities and helping meet the organization’s business objectives.

Physicians, faculty members join Banner – University Medicine, UA

Surgical Oncologist, Dr. Jennifer Erdrich, has joined the Division of General Surgery in the UA Department of Surgery as an assistant professor and surgical oncologist, practicing at Banner — UMC and the UA Cancer Center.

Erdrich specializes in melanoma, sarcoma and breast cancers.

She earned her medical degree from Harvard Medical School and a master’s degree in public health with a concentration in cancer prevention. She completed her residency and a fellowship in general surgery at Stanford. She also completed a National Cancer Institute-funded research fellowship at the Harvard School of Public Health and a fellowship in surgical oncology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Physicians, faculty members join Banner – University Medicine, UA

Dr. Holly Bullock, obstetrician and gynecologist has joined the University of Arizona Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the UA College of Medicine-Tucson as an assistant professor, practicing at Banner — University Medical Center.

Bullock received a master’s degree in public health, focusing on international health and working with the U.S. Peace Corps in Swaziland before medical school. She received her medical degree from East Carolina University before completing a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Hawaii. She completed a fellowship in family planning at the University of Utah.

Her clinical and research interests include contraception in the medically complicated patient and early pregnancy failure.

Physicians, faculty members join Banner – University Medicine, UA

Dr. Mohammad El-Ghanem has joined the UA Departments of Neurology and Medical Imaging as an assistant professor. He will serve as Banner – UMC’s attending physician for neuroendovascular surgery and vascular neurology and also will see patients at Banner — University Medicine North.

He specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of carotid disease, brain aneurysm, stroke, head and neck tumors and vascular malformations in the brain. He is experienced in minimally invasive, catheter-based procedures to treat these afflictions.

El-Ghanem came to the UA from the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School where he completed a residency in neurology and a fellowship in neuroendovascular surgery/interventional neuroradiology. He received his medical degree at the Jordan University of Sciences and Technology in Jordan.

Cristina Baena has been promoted to president of the employee benefits division for Crest Insurance Group, LLC of Arizona.

Baena will oversee 32 employees from the Tucson, Scottsdale, Sierra Vista, Flagstaff, San Diego and Denver office locations.

Baena has previously held the title of vice president of business development and is also a partner in the company.

She joined Crest Insurance Group in May 2014. Prior to joining Crest, she was the marketing and funding coordinator for the Tucson Conquistadores.

Former judge named UA’s Title IX director

Former judge named UA’s Title IX director

Ronald A. Wilson is the University of Arizona’s new Title IX director following a nationwide search.

Wilson will have oversight of the Title IX program, assessing the policies and processes of the current program and the level of support dedicated to Title IX investigations at the university. He will be responsible for developing comprehensive Title IX programs and implementing training.

Wilson, a former UA faculty member, has served as a chief diversity officer, equal opportunity administrator and investigator, agency open record officer, Title IX coordinator for gender equity in sport and Title IX investigator at Edinboro University in Pennsylvania.

He has roots in Arizona, serving as a presiding judge for the city of South Tucson in 2002. At the same time, Wilson was an adjunct faculty member for the UA Department of Africana Studies. He later became a faculty member at the Judicial College of Arizona at the Arizona Supreme Court in Phoenix. In 2014, Wilson served as vice president of the Tucson-Southern Arizona Black Chamber of Commerce.

County hires new behavioral health director

Pima County has appointed Paula Perrera to serve as the new director for the behavioral health department.

Perrera has worked with the Pima County Attorney’s Office since 2000 and served as the supervising attorney for the health law unit since 2007. During her tenure with the County Attorney’s Office, Perrera served as the in-house counsel for Kino Community Hospital, Pima Health Systems (the County’s AHCCCS health plan), Posada del Sol (the County operated skilled nursing facility), and played a key role in transitioning those units to the private sector.

Most recently, she drafted and negotiated contracts, including the current correctional health services agreement with Centurion.

Ramon Delgado has been appointed senior sous chef in banquets at JW Marriott Starr Pass Resort & Spa.

Delgado brings more than 25 years of experience to Starr Pass Resort & Spa, and was most recently the executive sous chef at the Omni Tucson National Golf Resort & Spa. Prior to that, Delgado was the executive chef of Desert Diamond Casinos in Tucson, for more than 10 years.

He has held similar positions at Marriott’s Rancho Las Palmas Resort in Rancho Mirage, California, as well as Loews Ventana Canyon Resort, the Lodge at Ventana Canyon and Hacienda del Sol Guest Ranch, all located in Tucson.

Semmens joins UA Family and Community Medicine and Banner – University Medicine

Dr. Shana Semmens, assistant professor, has joined the University of Arizona Department of Family and Community Medicine and Banner – University Medicine.

Semmens will provide the full scope of family medicine practice, providing outpatient primary care at Banner — University Medicine Family Medicine Clinic at the Abrams Public Health Center and inpatient care at Banner – University Medical Center South. She also will deliver babies and care for newborns and children at Banner – UMC Tucson.

Semmens earned her medical degree from the UA College of Medicine – Tucson. She completed her family medicine residency training with the UA College of Medicine – Tucson South Graduate Medical Education program, and went on to complete a fellowship in hospice and palliative medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina. Semmens has special interests in palliative medicine, women’s health, pediatrics and quality improvement.

Dr. Jeffrey Maudlin, assistant professor, has joined the University of Arizona Department of Family and Community Medicine and Banner – University Medicine.

Maudlin will provide primary care to patients of all ages and serve as the medical director at Banner – University Medicine Multispecialty Services Clinic in Green Valley. In addition, he will train physician-residents at the Banner – University Medicine Family Medicine Clinic at the Abrams Public Health Center in Tucson.

Previously, Maudlin was in private practice for many years in Nogales, Ariz., where he also served as chief of staff at Carondelet Holy Cross Hospital. Fluent in Spanish, he worked in a district hospital in Ecuador, and later served as director of a large residency program in a tertiary care referral hospital in Ecuador’s capital city, Quito. Maudlin has special interests in preventive medicine.

Recently, he oversaw a corporate campus for a Fortune 500 insurance company. He is a long-time Building Owners and Managers Association member, both chairing and vice-chairing the Westside and San Fernando Valley Regional Councils and is a past member of the BOMA Greater Los Angeles Political Affairs Committee.

During the last six months, Sierra Tucson recruited experts to join its team:

• Dr. Jasleen Chatwal, director of the mood program

They will offer treatment for individuals struggling with addiction and certain mental-health concerns.

They will offer treatment for individuals struggling with addiction and certain mental-health concerns.

Dr. Alicia Rodriguez-Pla joins the UA’s rheumatology faculty as a scleroderma and vasculitis specialist.

Also a University of Arizona Arthritis Center member, she trained at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Johns Hopkins University and Boston University and conducted research on lupus at the Baylor Institute for Immunology Research in Dallas.

After practicing as a clinical rheumatologist in Spain, she returned to the United States at the end of 2008 and worked in lupus research at the Baylor Institute for Immunology Research. She has devoted the last five years to complete a clinical fellowship in rheumatology at Boston University and residency in internal medicine at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center in Burlington, Massachusetts.

Last year, Stonum served his third temporary detail as a park superintendent, overseeing management of Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve in Colorado for four months. He previously was acting superintendent at Saguaro in 2014 and at Lewis and Clark National Historical Park in Oregon.

He has been chief of science and resource management at Saguaro since 2011, and he previously was a resource specialist at Joshua Tree National Park in California’s Mojave Desert.

Over the past nine years, Joseph has held a series of leadership positions within the UA Department of Surgery while working as a trauma surgeon, educator and active researcher.

He has served as the department’s vice chair of knowledge expansion, associate director of the Surgery Critical Care/Acute Care Fellowship Programs, director of the Southern Arizona Tele-Trauma Program, associate director of Tele-surgery in the Arizona Telemedicine Program and director of the International Research Fellowship.

Andrew Schulz was named dean of the College of Fine Arts at the University of Arizona.

Schulz will join the UA on Aug. 1.

For five years, Schulz served as associate dean for research in the College of Arts and Architecture at Penn State University. He also led strategic planning and faculty development efforts for the college, and he served this past year as interim head of the Department of Art History.

Before joining Penn State in 2013, Schulz was on the faculty at Seattle University from 1994 to 2005 and the University of Oregon from 2005 to 2012, where he served as department head of the history of art and architecture from 2009 to 2012.

Dr. Rachna Shroff has joined the University of Arizona Cancer Center where she serves as the new section chief of gastrointestinal medical oncology and associate professor at the UA College of Medicine — Tucson.

Dr. Shroff specializes in cancers of the pancreas and biliary tract. She comes to Arizona from Texas, where she was an associate professor at MD Anderson Cancer Center. She received her medical degree from Thomas Jefferson University, and did her clinical residency in internal medicine at Barnes-Jewish Hospital.

One of Dr. Shroff’s goals is to expand clinical trials. She also hopes to enlist scientists in the clinical trial process to strengthen understanding of a drug’s effectiveness.

Drs. Matthew W. Beal and Sarah E. Schram (pictured) are the new owners of Pima Dermatology.

The founder, Dr. Gerald N. Goldberg, transferred ownership of the practice to existing partner Beal and new partner Schram, both of whom are board certified by the American Board of Dermatology.

Beal joined Pima Dermatology in 2013, and became its first partner in 2016. He specializes in general dermatology, with special interest in cutaneous oncology and psoriasis. He received his Doctor of Medicine Degree at the University of Arizona College of Medicine and completed his dermatology residency at the University of Minnesota, where he served as chief resident.

Schram came on as the practice’s full-time Mohs Surgeon in 2015. She specializes in Mohs skin cancer surgery, with a special interest in cutaneous oncology and cosmetic dermatology. She earned her Doctor of Medicine Degree and completed her dermatology residency at the University of Minnesota Medical School. She received extensive training in Mohs and laser surgery during a Procedural Dermatology Fellowship at the University of Minnesota.

Goldberg has assumed a new role as cosmetic and laser surgical center director. The Laser Center is slated to open by early 2019.

Megha Padi has been appointed director of the University of Arizona Cancer Center’s Bioinformatics Shared Resource and is an assistant professor in the UA Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology.

In her new roles, Padi provides research support to UA Cancer Center investigators, connecting them with faculty members in other departments, such as mathematics and computer science. She is bilingual in the lexicons of both math and biology, and hopes to use her “interpreter skills” to facilitate conversations and expand collaboration.

Padi joins the UA from Boston, where she taught at Harvard Medical School and served as a postdoctoral fellow at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Harvard School of Public Health.

Dr. Michael D. Dake has been appointed senior vice president for health sciences at the University of Arizona.

Dake, who also will hold an appointment as a professor of radiology, will assume his new duties on June 4.

He currently serves as Stanford University’s Thelma and Henry Doelger Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery. He also directs the Catheterization and Angiography Laboratories at Stanford Medical Center.

As the UA senior vice president for health sciences, Dake will lead the integration of undergraduate and graduate education, research and clinical activities among the UA health colleges and their clinical partners.

Dake is a graduate of Harvard College where he completed an internship, residency and chief residency in internal medicine. He is board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary disease, diagnostic radiology, and vascular and interventional radiology.

Arvayo will be responsible for the day to day operations, which includes financial, volunteers and infrastructure.

Most recently, Arvayo served as director of operations for Salpointe Catholic High School football. He has also volunteered or worked for several high-profile sports entities, including the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Phoenix Suns, the 2008 Super Bowl and the 2017 NCAA Final Four.

Meghan Kish, a 12-year veteran of the National Park Service, has been named superintendent of the Southern Arizona office.

Kish oversees regional support for Southern Arizona parks, with direct responsibility over Tonto, Montezuma Castle and Tuzigoot National Monuments. The Southern Arizona office also provides administrative support for the Western Archeological & Conservation Center in Tucson and facility management support for parks with deferred maintenance projects.

She will also be the region’s state coordinator for Arizona’s 22 NPS units.

Most recently, Kish served as superintendent of New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park, Roger Williams National Memorial and Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

Ortega will oversee the building and site development process including building permits, subdivision plats, grading and construction plans including delegated functions from Pima County Department of Environmental Quality, Pima County Department of Transportation and Pima County Regional Wastewater Reclamation Department.

Ortega has been with Pima County since 2015, leading the site division for three years. She previously was public works director/city engineer for the City of Douglas.

Truly Nolen Pest Control has promoted Mark Ringlstetter to vice president of training/technical services and customer care.

Ringlstetter oversees all technical aspects for Truly Nolen, as well as ensures training programs are developed and maintained. He also oversees the quality of the company’s services, technical procedures, and call center procedures with a focus on safety.

Ringlstetter has been a member of the Truly Nolen family since 2001, beginning as a commercial sales inspector at the Palm Desert, Calif. service office, but also serving as a service office manager in Palm Springs, Anaheim, and San Diego as well as district manager for California.

In 2014, he was promoted to director of training and technical services. Most recently, Ringlstetter added the responsibility of overseeing the company’s customer care center.

Sierra Tucson puts Wilson in chief medical officer role

Sierra Tucson appointed Dr. Aaron Wilson as its chief medical officer.

Dr. Wilson will be responsible for working to advance clinical and medical programing, and to improve the outcomes of the treatment center’s residents. He also will assist in the development of Sierra Tucson’s medical team; working to provide enhanced safety for residents and staff; and greater ease of access for clients.

Prior to joining Sierra Tucson, Dr. Wilson served as medical director of Valley Hospital, a private psychiatric hospital in Phoenix. He also served as medical director of the Freedom Care Unit, which focuses on the mental health needs of military service members and first responders.

Dr. Wilson received his medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine and completed his residency in psychiatry.

Additionally, Sierra Tucson promoted two members of its medical staff.

Dr. Dianne Keller was appointed to the position of associate medical director, and Shannon Padilla, DNP, was named the co-director of Desert Flower Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit.

Dr. Nancy Chen has joined the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Arizona College of Medicine — Tucson and Banner Children’s — Diamond Children’s Medical Center.

Dr. Chen joined the Division of Hospital Medicine as a clinical assistant professor.

As a pediatric hospitalist, Dr. Chen will provide care for hospitalized children at Banner Children’s — Diamond Children’s Medical Center.

Dr. Chen earned her medical degree from Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons. She completed her residency in pediatrics at the University of California, San Francisco, and went on to complete a fellowship in pediatric hospital medicine from Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

Simon Marxer was named director of spas for Miraval Group.

He is charged with overseeing all spas and creating new and innovative treatments and services. Most recently, Marxer was vice president of business development for Red Flower, a luxury beauty brand. Before that, he served as the spa director at Miraval Arizona.

Marxer has also served as the spa director of The Boulders Waldorf Astoria Collection, managing director of Cornelia Day Resort and the spa director of Canyon Ranch.

Radio personality and community connector Jennie Grabel has been hired as KXCI’s program director and membership coordinator.

Grabel is joining the local, non-comm station after a three-year tenure as director of community impact at Social Venture Partners Tucson.

Grabel is not new to KXCI, having hosted the afternoon music mix on the station from 2000-2004. She has also served as executive director of the Fund for Civility, Respect and Understanding, an organization started following the Jan. 8, 2011, shooting in Tucson.

Prior to her time in the nonprofit sector, Grabel spent eight years in commercial radio as a local morning show host and assistant program director of former radio station 92.9 The Mountain.

The Town of Marana has named Jason Angell director of development services.

Angell previously served in the same capacity in Marshfield, Wisconsin. Before that he worked in Minneapolis-St. Paul area as city planner for Minnetrista, Minnesota.

He will guide the newly formed development services department as they combine the Town’s planning department and building inspections department under one umbrella. Angell will also be involved in updating the Town’s land development code, amending the general plan and enhancing the development review process.

Marana’s new town manager is Jamsheed Mehta.

The Town Council voted unanimously to hire Mehta, who has been serving as interim town manager since November.

Mehta became deputy town manager in March 2014 where he oversaw development services, airport, engineering, utilities, and public works departments.

He had previously served as interim assistant city manager for the city of Glendale.

Dr. David Stewart is an associate professor and the new section chief of colon and rectal surgery in the UA Department of Surgery.

He received his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine, completed his surgery residency at the Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, and then underwent fellowship training in colon and rectal surgery at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

Stewart specializes in the surgical treatment of colorectal disease.

Banner-University Medical Center and the University of Arizona Department of Surgery added three new surgeons.

Dr. Marion Henry joined the faculty as an associate professor in the UA Departments of Surgery and Pediatrics. She came to Tucson from Naval Medical Center San Diego, where she was a commander in the Medical Corps.

She earned her medical degree from Stanford University School of Medicine and completed her general surgical residency at Stanford Hospital and Clinics and at Yale University, where she also earned a master’s degree in public health and a research fellowship in pediatric surgery. Henry completed further fellowship training in pediatric surgery at the Children’s National Medical Center, and is board certified in general and pediatric surgeries.

Henry specializes in neonatal, pediatric and thoracic surgery.

Dr. Victoria Murrain has been appointed interim deputy dean for diversity and inclusion at the University of Arizona College of Medicine — Tucson.

Dr. Murrain is also assistant dean and designated institutional officer for graduate medical education at the Tucson UA South Campus and associate professor in the UA Department of Family and Community Medicine.

As interim deputy dean, Dr. Murrain serves as chief diversity officer for the UA College of Medicine — Tucson, and, with key stakeholders, will develop a sustainable plan for implementation of clear college-wide policies and strategies pertaining to diversity and inclusion.

Dr. Murrain received her DO from the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific (now Western University) in Pomona, Calif.

She earned her medical degree from St. George’s University School of Medicine and completed her residency in pediatrics at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, as well as a Master’s in Public Health degree from the School of Public Health at the State University of New York at Albany. Dr. Jean completed a fellowship in pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition from Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.

Dr. Abu-Maziad earned her medical degree from Suez Canal University School of Medicine and completed her residency in pediatrics at the University of Hawaii. She is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics.

Akorbi, a provider of language and technology solutions, has named Kenneth Anders its new chief operating officer. 

Anders will work remotely from Tucson for the Texas-based company. 

In his new role, Anders will work to differentiate, implement and innovate the organization to further fast-track its growth through quality language communication services and a customer-centric delivery platform and applications.

With 35 years of leadership experience, Anders brings a portfolio of technology, operations and service delivery for Fortune 500 companies including the Walt Disney Company and Hughes Aircraft (Raytheon). He has a background in developing language start-up organizations, engineering world-wide interpreting, translation and localization companies. Anders has also held executive roles at both CyraCom and TransPerfect, and a previous role in the delivery of new technology for LanguageLine Solutions.

Krista Millay joins Women’s Foundation of Southern Arizona

Krista Millay has been named the new community impact director of the Women’s Foundation of Southern Arizona.

She brings over 15 years of experience as a researcher, teacher and program manager, most recently serving as the director of the Women’s Resource Center at the University of Arizona.

In her new role, Millay will be responsible for providing strategic leadership and direction for the Foundation’s grant-making program and research initiatives, for leading community outreach and engagement, including fostering collaboration among partners and facilitating the Unidas youth philanthropy program.
