The Scottsdale Unified School District is about to flip the switch on solar shade structures at its Chaparral and Desert Mountain high schools.
Eventually, 11 campuses in the district will get the structures, and the rooftop photovoltaic panels will convert sunlight into about 5.5 megawatts of power.
The Arizona Republic reports that Chaparral will be the first solar-shade project to go live, probably within the next month.
The project's $26.4 million costs will be paid for through a federal program of interest-free bonds intended to stimulate the construction industry.
