Due to plunging mail volumes, the Tucson Post Office’s Midtown Station at 5401 E. Fifth St. will close and its operations will be consolidated into the Coronado Station at 255 N. Rosemont Blvd., effective at the close of business Jan. 28.
In an announcement today, the U.S. Postal Service said the action was necessary because of “recent extraordinary declines in mail volume,” cited a study conducted last year that proposed the change.
“Given the huge decline in mail volume — a decline of nearly 26 billion pieces nationally this past year alone — we must take action to reduce the size of our retail and delivery network,” said Tucson Postmaster Carl Grigel said in prepared remarks. “By consolidating, streamlining and adjusting our operations, the Postal Service becomes a more efficient and effective organization.”
Local mail delivery will not be affected by the move, and full retail services will still be available, Grigel said.

Postal employees affected by the move will be reassigned “in accordance with applicable collective bargaining agreements and established repositioning processes,” the Postal Service said.
Midtown customers wishing to conduct postal business at a retail location in the city can continue to do so at one of 17 Post Office locations in the Tucson area, as well as 17 contract postal unit locations inside other businesses, including five Office Depot stores.
