Mileage rates for 2012 announced by IRS
The Internal Revenue Service announced Friday the 2012 optional standard mileage rates used to calculate the deductible costs of operating an automobile for business, charitable, medical or moving purposes.
Beginning Jan. 1, the standard mileage rates for use of a car, van, pickup or panel truck will be:
• 55.5 cents per mile driven for business.
• 23 cents per mile driven for medical or moving purposes.
• 14 cents per mile driven in service of charitable organizations.
The rate for business miles is unchanged. The medical and moving rate is being reduced by 0.5 cent per mile, the IRS's Phoenix office said in a news release. Taxpayers always have the option of calculating the actual costs of using their vehicle rather than using the standard mileage rates.
