The Internal Revenue Service e-file and Free File services open for business today. Free File is a free electronic tax preparation system for people with $54,000 or less in adjusted gross income. Taxpayers may access Free File by going online to www.irs.gov.
Due to late-passing legislation to adjust the Alternative Minimum Tax, certain tax returns will be rejected if filed before Feb. 11. Anyone who files form Nos. 8863, 5695, 8396 or 8859, or a Schedule 2 on Form 1040A must wait a month because the IRS cannot currently process them.
In 2007, about 57 percent of Arizona tax returns filed as of Oct. 21 were filed electronically.
