Discount retail chain Marshalls is expanding in the Tucson market, opening at El Con Mall, 3601 E. Broadway.
“I think Marshalls going there says a lot because they’re part of the TJX company. “They’re a very profitable retailer, so we’re pleased to have them,” said John L. Rubenstein, of Rubenstein Real Estate Co., which represented TKG El Con Center, LLC, in the acquisition of El Con in May.
Construction of the new 25,000-square-foot store is set to begin in January 2015, in the rock-filled lot next door to Burlington Coat Factory. The store is scheduled to open in June or July 2015.
With the addition of Marshalls, El Con Mall is “100 percent leased,” Rubenstein said. Mattress Firm will open by Christmas, and Cheddar’s Cafe is getting ready to open first of the year, he added.

Rubenstein said the only other space at El Con is next to JC Penney, but it’s “uninhabitable.”
Marshalls’ other two Tucson locations are at 1167 W. Irvington Road and 7900 N. Oracle Road.
