The Navy has awarded Tucson-based Raytheon Missile Systems a contract worth $149 million as the company ramps up production of its latest ship-defense missile.
The contract for 74 complete Standard Missile-6 rounds, spare parts, containers and services is on top of a $110 million long-lead material purchase contract, bringing the total value of full-rate production for fiscal 2015-2016 to $259 million, Raytheon said. Future contract modifications include options which could bring the cumulative value of the contract to nearly $563 million, the company said.
First deployed in 2013, the SM-6 is a supersonic surface-to-air missile designed to destroy manned and unmanned aircraft and land-attack and anti-ship cruise missiles in flight. The missile's final assembly takes place at Raytheon's factory at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Ala.
