Ex-Cat Steve Kerr to coach in NBA All-Star Game

  • Jan 22, 2015
  • Jan 22, 2015 Updated May 24, 2016

First-year NBA coach Steve Kerr is off to the best start in history.

Rookie coach Kerr to lead All-Star team

Former Arizona Wildcats basketball standout Steve Kerr will coach the West team in the NBA All-Star Game, held Feb. 15 in New York City.

Kerr, the head coach of the Golden State Warriors, is the first rookie coach to lead an All-Star team since Larry Bird was selected for the position in 1998.

Ex-Cat Kerr off to best start in history

That's not all Kerr has been in the headlines for recently. He has his Warriors off to the best start in franchise history with a record of 34-6.

Here's a look at some of Kerr's notable stats, starting with his coaching tear and looking back through his playing days.

Kerr already top three

Earlier this season, Kerr led his Warriors to a 16-game winning streak, which is tied for the second-best winning streak by a first-year NBA coach.

Here's the list of longest winning streaks by first-year coaches:

Longest winning streaks by first-year NBA coaches

Coach Number on wins Year
Red Auerbach 17 1946-47
Steve Kerr 16 2014-15
Mike Dunleavy 16 1990-91
Red Auerbach 15 1946-47
Paul Westphal 14 1992-93

Nobody better than Kerr

During his playing days, Steve Kerr was best known as a shooter.

Throughout the course of his career, he posted the best career three-point field goal percentage in NBA history, which is .454. He made 726 three-pointers out of 1,599 attempted during his 15-year career (1988-2003).

A true champion

During his career, Kerr won five NBA championships. Even more impressively, he spent one-third of his career as a champion, playing 15 seasons in the league.

Kerr won three championships with the Chicago Bulls and two with the San Antonio Spurs.

Wildcat for life

Although Kerr was a successful NBA player, his success started during his days at the UA. In his last season at Arizona in 1988, Kerr helped lead the Cats to a Final Four appearance.

After his long career in Tucson (1983-88), Kerr's number, 25, was retired by the UA.

Almost unstoppable from three

During the 1988-89 season, Steve Kerr set the NCAA record for best three-point field goal percentage in a season with a minimum of 100 attempts.

Kerr drained 57.3 percent of his three-pointers, making 114 out of 199 attempted.

In the same season he also set the NCAA record for most consecutive games making a three-pointer. He hit a three in 38 straight games.

Best of the best

Kerr not only holds the NCAA and NBA records for best three-point field goal percentage, he also holds the UA school record for a season.

In 1987-88, Kerr sunk 57.3 percent of his three-pointers — 114 of 199.

Kerr, 21 others honored forever

Steve Kerr is one of 22 total UA basketball players who have made it into McKale Center's Ring of Honor. In order to be honored with this elite group, players have to meet at least one of six criteria, including things like being selected as a first-team All-American or receiving a major national "player of distinction" award.

Here's the list of Cats in the Ring of Honor:
