Nine cool things to do in Tucson this weekend

  • Sep 13, 2017
  • Sep 13, 2017 Updated Sep 14, 2017

Thursday, September 13-October 1 — Watch Shakespeare in Himmel Park

Shakespeare in the Park

Kaylee Wilt, left, as Mustard Seed and Sophia Alexander as Pease Blossom, rehearse their fight choreography as a monsoon storm rolls in over Himmel Park and the El Rio Theatre Project’s Shakespeare in the Park production of A Midsummer Night's Dream, Thursday, September 6, 2017, Tucson, Ariz.

Kelly Presnell / Arizona Daily Star

From Star reporter Kathleen Allen:

For nine years, the Tucson Parks & Recreation employee Michael Givens helped produce the city’s “Shakespeare Under the Stars” at the DeMeester Outdoor Performance Art Center in Reid Park.

But in 2004, he was transferred from the Randolph Recreation Center, which mounted the plays, to El Rio Neighborhood Center.

Givens, who has been involved with theater for most of his 60-some years, missed putting on a show.

And he happened to have a new boss who loved Shakespeare performed in the open air.

“She really liked the shows and wanted to give us an opportunity to do them,” says Givens, now the recreation coordinator at Archer Community Center. He pauses and then comes clean: “Ok, I kind of begged her.”

Shakespeare in the Park at Himmel Park Outdoor Amphitheatre was born. The 11th annual production, the Bard’s magical comedy “A Midsummers Night’s Dream,” opens Friday, Sept. 15.

Shakespeare Under the Stars at Reid Park brought the curtain down in 2009, 21 years after it had begun. The recession was in full swing and the city could no longer finance it.

But Shakespeare in the Park at Himmel, by then two years old and run on a barely-there budget, continued.

It’s Givens’ persistence and dedication — his role as that burr — that has kept it alive for the last 11 years.

While the City of Tucson provides a place to store costumes, rehearse, the Himmel Park space and electricity, Givens has to come up with the money for costumes, lights, sound equipment, wood and paint for sets, and, he hopes, money for the actors and crew.

So he formed a non-profit, the El Rio Performing Arts Guild, in order to raise funds.

The Sam Hughes neighborhood association gives a donation every year. But it is during intermission, when costumed actors come out with hat in hand to collect money, that keeps them going.

The donations cover the budget — generally about $3,000 a year. Last year, Givens was able to pay the actors and crew about $80 each.

“I always want to pay them,” says Givens.

“Midsummer” has a cast of 19, plus a dozen or more people who help build sets, do costumes, lights and so on.

“Michael is tenacious,” says Stephen Dunham, who was in the first Himmel production — “Twelfth Night” — and kept coming back for more. This year, he plays Demetrius, one of the young lovers in “Midsummer”.

“He has a rigorous rehearsal schedule, does the lights, the whole shebang.”

Thursday, September 14 — 'Fall Down' with Toad the Wet Sprocket

Toad the Wet Sprocket

Toad the Wet Sprocket, from Santa Barbara, Calif., had a run of hits in the 1990s, including “Fall Down” and “All I Want.”

Rob Shanahan

Toad the Wet Sprocket is first up on Thursday, Sept. 14. This Santa Barbara, California, band released four albums in the ’90s that included hits “Walk On the Ocean” and “Fall Down,” but their single “All I Want” will likely be stuck in your head at the end of the night.

In 2015, the band proved it’s still got it when it released a six-song EP “Architect of the Ruin” on iTunes. Doors for Thursday’s show open at 7 p.m. and tickets are $36 to $65 with VIP packages available.

Thurs., Sept 14.-Sat. Sept. 16 — Get your ha-has with Jerry Seinfeld, Anjelah Johnson

He's baack

After a five-year absence, Jerry Seinfeld is coming back to Tucson.

Arizona Daily star file

The arrival of two extremely hilarious comedians in our midst this week couldn’t have come too soon.

Apparently time does make the heart grow fonder. Jerry Seinfeld (“Seinfeld,” Netflix’s “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee”) hasn’t stood on a Tucson stage since he played Centennial Hall in 2012. He returns to the Tucson Music Hall, 260 S. Church Ave., for a show at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14, and if you didn’t act when the show was announced back in May, you’re out of luck: There are no tickets left.

The last time we saw the Emmy-winning standup/comic actor last was shortly after he launched his web series “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee,” which was picked up by Netflix early this year. One of the comedians getting coffee with Seinfeld was Tucson native Garry Shandling, who was featured on the show in January 2016; he died two months later.

Also scheduled: Anjelah Johnson (“Nail Salon,” MADtv) is returning to the Diamond Center, where she played her first and only Tucson show back in 2015. She sold out the venue.

Expect on Saturday, Sept. 16, to hear her take on her Bon Qui Qui character and possibly resurrect the nail salon skit that catapulted her career into sold-out-show status. She’s at Desert Diamond Casino, 1100 W. Pima Mine Road, at 8 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $25 to $55 through startickets.com.

Saturday, Sept. 15 — Congratulate Button Brew House on its grand opening

Husband-and-wife team Todd and Erika Button quietly opened their Button Brew House off of West Ina Road last week.

Now that they are all settled in, they're ready to hold the mother-of-all brewery grand opening parties from noon to 6 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday at their brand new location, 6800 N. Camino Martin, right around the corner from Catalina Brewing Company.

After three years on the hunt, the couple signed a lease for the space in December.

For Todd, who left a 20-year career in the printing industry to enter into brewing, this next step is a big deal.

“To me it feels like a dream,” Todd told the Star in January. The space is a little more than 3,000 square feet.

“We want to make good, world-class beers,” he said. “I want to make sure we do it the right way. Quality is important. We don’t want off-flavors.”

Saturday, September 16 — Skate like nobody's watching at the TCC

Still have your old ice skates sitting in the back of your closet?

If you haven't donated them to Goodwill, head to the Tucson Arena, 260 S. Church Ave., this Saturday for a public skate session from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

You must have your own skates. Admission is $10. More information can be found on the TCC website.

Sunday, September 17 — Antique hunt at San Xavier

Brandi Fenton Antique Fair

Ted Welsch, from Ruidoso, N.M., walks around some old metal signs including an old advertisement for Rayne Creme Shampoo featuring movie star Jayne Mansfield during the monthly Brandi Fenton Antique Fair at 3482 E River Rd., in Tucson on Dec. 18, 2016. The fair is held on the third Sunday of every month from October through March. Vendors sell their antique and vintage goods from 9am to 3pm. A.E. Araiza / Arizona Daily Star

Antique hunters looking for vintage finds beyond the shops and malls that dot the city, have another option this weekend.

The Wa:k Walk-up Antique/Farmers Market, running from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. every third Sunday at San Xavier Co-op Farm, 8100 S. Oidak Wog off of West San Xavier Road, is the new kid on the block.

The event will take place south of Tucson, right around the corner from Mission San Xavier del Bac, on an open lot owned by the San Xavier Co-op Farm.

The monthly event, which will operate on a year-round basis, will be part antique fair and part farmers market, according to coordinator Angelo Rios,

Customers can browse through vintage and antique finds provided by dealers from Tucson and Phoenix, while noshing on mesquite cookies, fresh produce and fry bread, made by members of the Tohono O’odham community.

Rios, an antique dealer for more than 20 years who is on the farm’s board, said the goal is to bring money into the community and more exposure to the co-op and its mission: Utilizing healthy farming practices and growing traditional crops to support cultural and environmental values, as well as economic development within the community, according to its website.

Expect about ten antique dealers selling at this event. Rios said if the fair gets off the ground, there is plenty of room at the farm for expansion.

Thursday, September 14 — Visit the new Spaghetti Western-themed restaurant

Thursday, September 14 — Visit the new Spaghetti Western-themed restaurant
Kelly Presnell/Arizona Daily Star

Restaurateur powerhouse Kade Mislinski has his hands in a lot of pies these days.

Mislinski has ties to several restaurants around town, including Saguaro Corners, Batch, Bar Passe and Mother Hubbard's.

On Thursday, he will be able to add one more to his roster: Classic - A Spaghetti Western Steakhouse, at 1535 N. Stone Ave, north of Drachman.

The restaurant plays off the old Spaghetti Westerns made famous by a young Clint Eastwood and the distinct music of Ennio Morricone.

Find out what that might taste like at the grand opening from 5 p.m. onward.
