There's no question that Arizona sophomore linebacker Scooby Wright's 2014 season will go down in history. Here's a look at some of Wright's most impressive statistics and accomplishments from the 2014 season.
Is Scooby Wright Arizona's best defensive player ever?
Sophomore linebacker Scooby Wright's 2014 season will go down in history.
Scooby's record-breaking season
163 total tackles — most in the nation
Scooby finished the season with 163 total tackles, which is the most by any player in the Pac-12 and in the nation.
Wright's 163 stops are the most by an Arizona player in a season since 1986, when Byron Evans had 196 total tackles. The UA school record is 200, set by Mark Jacobs in 1974.
Wright also had a few games where he put up a notable number of tackles. When facing UCLA, he had 19 tackles, which is the most by a UA player in a game since Marcus Bell had 20 against ASU in 1999. Before that, Wright put up 18 tackles against Cal.
Six forced fumbles — new UA school record
Wright had six forced fumbles in 2014, which was the most by any player in the country.
When Wright forced his sixth fumble this season, he broke the previous UA school record, which was originally set in 1983 by Ricky Hunley. Chris Singleton is the only other UA player to force five fumbles in a season, which he did in 1988.
14 sacks
Wright had 14 sacks during the season, which was third in the Pac-12 and the nation.
Wright's 14 are the most by an Arizona player since Tedy Bruschi had 14.5 in 1995. Two years before that, Bruschi set the UA school record with 19 sacks.
Additionally, Wright's 14 sacks are more than nine FBS team's total sacks on the season. The teams and number of total sacks are as follows:
-UConn: 13
-South Carolina: 12
-Georgia State: 12
-Eastern Michigan: 12
-San Jose State: 12
-Kent State: nine
-Army: nine
-Navy: five
-New Mexico State: five
28 tackles-for-loss
Wright had 28 tackles-for-loss, which led the country in the category.
Wright's 28 TFLs are the most by an Arizona player since 1968, when Tom Nelson had 29, which is also the UA record. If Wright has two or more tackles-for-loss in Arizona's bowl game, he'll become the new record holder.
99 unassisted tackles
Scooby posted 99 unassisted tackles during the season, which is the most by a Wildcat since Chester Burnett had 98 in 1996.
The UA school record, however, is 118 unassisted tackles, which was set by Byron Evans in 1985.
64 assisted tackles
Wright had a total of 64 assisted tackles during 2014, which is the most by a UA player since 1989, when Darren Case had 67.
The UA school record is 96, set by LaMonte Hunley in 1984.
Bronko Nagurski Award winner
Wright won the Bronko Nagurski Award, given annually to the top defensive player in college football. He beat out finalists Landon Collins (Alabama), Malcolm Brown (Texas), Senquez Golson (Ole Miss) and Gerod Holliman (Louisville) to win the award.
Wright is the second player in UA history to win the Nagurski. Rob Waldrop captured it in 1993, the first year of the award’s existence.
Rotary Lombardi Award winner
Wright won the Rotary Lombardi Award on Dec. 10 at the Bayou Music Center. He beat out Clemson’s Vic Beasley, Ohio State’s Joey Bosa and Washington’s Hau’oli Kikaha.
The Lombardi Award honors the lop linebacker or lineman in college football. Wright is the first player in Arizona history to win the Lombardi Award. He’s also the first player from the Pac-10/12 to earn it since Arizona State’s Terrell Suggs in 2002.
Chuck Bednarik Award winner
Wright won the Chuck Bednarik Award — given to the top defensive player in college football — on Dec. 11.
Wright was announced as the winner at the Home Depot College Football Awards Show at the Atlantic Dance Hall on Disney’s Boardwalk. He beat out Ohio State’s Joey Bosa and Clemson’s Vic Beasley to become the first player in Arizona history to win the award.
The UA’s middle linebacker was nominated for the Bronko Nagurski Award, Rotary Lombardi Award and the Bednarik after his breakout sophomore season. He won them all, starting with the Nagurski Award on Dec. 8 in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year winner
Wright was honored as the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year for his outstanding season.
He was also recognized as the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week three times this season.
CBS Sports' Defensive Player of the Year winner
Wright was named CBS Sports' Defensive Player of the Year on Dec. 10.
Scooby a unanimous All-American
Scooby Wright became the sixth player in Arizona football history on Dec. 17 to be named a unanimous All-American. He officially became the first UA player since Chris McAlister in 1998 to be a unanimous All-American.
Wright, who had previously been named first-team All-America by the Walter Camp Foundation and The Associated Press, was named to three more teams on Dec. 17. They were: Sporting News, the Football Writers Association of America and the American Football Coaches Association. Those five teams combine to make up consensus and unanimous distinctions for players.
McAlister (1998), Tedy Bruschi (1995), Rob Waldrop (1993), Darryll Lewis (1990) and Ricky Hunley (1983) were the only UA players to earn unanimous status before Wright joined the club. He's the first UA player to earn the distinction in a year other than his senior season.
First since '99
Wright is the first player since 1999 to finish the season ranked in the top five in tackles, tackles-for-loss and sacks. The last player to do it was Clemson’s Keith Adams.
One of a kind
Wright is the only FBS player to rank nationally in the top 25 for each of the following categories:
-Tackles: 163
-Tackles-for-loss: 28
-Sacks: 14
-Forced fumbles: six
Walter Camp Player of the Year finalist
Wright was named a finalist for the Walter Camp Player of the Year award in Dec. 2014, however, he eventually lost to Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota who received the award.
Wright was recognized twice this season as the Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week.
No love for home
Although he's from Windsor, Calif., Wright didn't show much love to his home state in 2014. In three games against teams from California (Cal, USC, UCLA), Wright has 49 tackles, 11.5 tackles-for-loss and six sacks.
