2004-05 High School Winter All-Stars

  • Jun 28, 2014
  • Jun 28, 2014 Updated Jun 16, 2015

2004-05 High School Girls Soccer

2004-05 Girls soccer

Player of the Year

Jenna Merideth, Jr., Catalina Foothills

There were plenty of players who contributed to Foothills' near flawless run to the Class 4A state championship, but perhaps none was as integral as Merideth.

She scored five goals in four state tournament games for the Falcons (24-1-1), including the go-ahead strike in a win over Scottsdale Chaparral to put her team in the state title game.

Coach of the Year

Charlie Kendrick, Catalina Foothills

The past has been heaven for Kendrick and his program, which has won two 4A state championships in three years and has lost only three times in its last 73 games.

But the future could be even better for the Falcons coach. Case in point: five of Foothills' goals in its 8-1 win over Flagstaff in the state final were scored by freshmen and sophomores.

2004-05 High School Boys Soccer All-Stars

2004-05 Boys soccer

Player of the Year

C.J. Kaufman, Sr., Salpointe Catholic

In his four years at Salpointe, Kaufman has been asked to play many roles but none may have been more difficult than the leadership position he took this year. Kaufman not only helped offensively but also helped to lead a young defense in one of the most difficult regions in the state.

As a result, Kaufman helped lead Salpointe Catholic to an undefeated 5A Southern Region record.

The Lancers lost to Gilbert in the quarterfinals but would not have made it that far if it were not for the play of Kaufman. He scored two goals in the Lancers' 3-2 victory over Yuma in a performance that coach Wolfgang Weber described as "ranking up there with the best in the 23 years that I have been here."

Coach of the Year

Jon Pearlman, Sabino

The Sabercats' fiery coach was productive from the start of the season, but got the best results out of his team when it mattered. After failing to win the 4A Kino regional tournament, Sabino rebounded in time to make an unlikely playoff run.

The Sabercats won four state tournament games in eight days before beating Glendale Cactus 1-0 to capture the 4A state title.

2004-05 High School Boys Basketball All-Stars

2004-05 Boys basketball

Player of the Year

Devin Stewart, Sr., Santa Rita

A list of things that Stewart did better than any other player in Southern Arizona: scoring, defending, creating open shots for teammates, getting to the free-throw line, and - most important of all - winning.

The standout guard guided Santa Rita to the Class 4A state championship game, where it lost to Glendale Apollo. But without Stewart's far-reaching talents, the Eagles would have been mere spectators for much of the postseason.

Coach of the Year

Dave Glasgow, Sierra Vista Buena

Glasgow won three state titles at the 3A level with Coolidge from 1993 to 2004, but his task this season - turning Buena, the perennial doormat of the 5A Southern Region, into a winner - was daunting.

In no time, Glasgow helped the Colts quadruple their win total from 2004 to this season, finish second in a difficult region and advance to the 5A state playoffs for the first time since 1996. Remarkable.

2004-05 High School Girls Basketball All-Stars

2004-05 Girls basketball

Player of the year

Kate Engelbrecht, Sr., Catalina Foothills

As a senior, the Arizona State signee averaged 15.7 points per game, along with more than five rebounds and four assists.

Her ability with and without the ball was a major reason the Falcons won the 4A Kino Region tournament and advanced to the state quarterfinals. Later she won the state three-point shootout.

In four years as a varsity starter, Engelbrecht scored close to 2,000 points.

Coach of the Year

Todd Holthaus, Flowing Wells

It took some time and a great deal of effort, but Holthaus has built Flowing Wells into a girls basketball powerhouse. His team continued to build on that legacy this season.

Flowing Wells was 25-9 and advanced to the state tournament. The Caballeros also handed Salpointe Catholic its first loss to a 5A Southern opponent since 2002.

2004-05 High School Wrestling All-Stars

2004-05 Wrestling

Wrestlers of the year

Nick Gallick, Sr., Sunnyside, and Matt Lopez, Sr., Sunnyside

Gallick and Lopez did not win every match in their high school careers, but they were victorious in the ones that mattered most.

The seniors - Gallick in the 125-pound class, Lopez at 103 - won individual Class 4A state championships for the fourth time in four years last month, and Sunnyside won its eighth consecutive team state title (six in 4A, two in 5A).

Coach of the Year

Bobby DeBerry, Sunnyside

Winning never gets old. Just ask DeBerry, whose program has won the 4A state meet every year this century.

DeBerry didn't start the Blue Devils' dynasty, but this year's first-place finish at state tied him with Don Klostreich for most state titles (nine) in school history.
