2000 High School Girls Track All-Stars

Girls Athlete of the Year

Connie Jerz, Tucson

Jerz was leaps and bounds above the rest of the competition, literally. She broke the state pole vault mark four times during her senior year. The record stands at 12 feet, 6Ý inches, more than a foot longer than the previous high and more than 4 feet better than anyone else in Tucson.

Jerz, who is expected to compete for San Diego State next season, also had the city's best long jump at 17-3Ý.

Girls Coach of the Year

John Warren, Sahuaro

Warren's Cougars had the highest point total of any Southern Arizona 4A or 5A school at the state meet, logging 35 points for a fourth-place finish in 4A.

Sahuaro had state champions in the triple jump (sophomore Nina Henson) and the 3,200-meter relay team.

2000 High School Boys Track All-Stars

Boys Athlete of the Year

Adrain Thomas, Sierra Vista Buena

Thomas was a bolt of lightning down the tracks of Southern Arizona this season, recording the fastest local times in the 200- and 400-meter runs.

Thomas, who is expected to run for UA next season, capped his career off with a second-place finish in the 200 and a state title in the 400 at the 5A state meet in Tempe.

Boys Coach of the Year

Bill Henson, Sierra Vista Buena

Henson's Colts went 15-0 in the regular season in dual meet competition, then won the 5A Southern Region meet and were the highest Southern Arizona scorer at the 5A boys

2000 High School Boys Volleyball All-Stars

Player of the Year

Shane Robinson, Rincon

Robinson averaged close to 12 kills per game during his senior season, during which the Rangers compiled a 20-6 record and finished second in the 5A Southern Region.

Robinson was also a strong server for one of only two teams in Southern Arizona to defeat perennial powerhouse Canyon del Oro.

Coach of the Year

Joan Aufderheide, Santa Rita

The Eagles overcame a strong bout of homesickness to win their first-ever region title this season.

Aufderheide piloted Santa Rita to a 16-7 record despite never getting to play at home. The floor of the Eagles' gym was being repaired after long-term flood damage forced the surface to buckle.

2000 High School Boys Tennis All-Stars

Boys Player of the Year

Patrick Brick, St. Gregory

This is more of a lifetime achievement award for Brick, who by winning the Class 1A-2A state title last month became only the second boys tennis player in Arizona history to win four singles titles.

Brick is expected to attend Princeton in the fall, where he will aim for a spot on the tennis team.

Boys Coach of the Year

Roland Kotwica, Rincon

In Rincon's first year at the 5A level, the Rangers unseated perennial region champion Salpointe Catholic, then proceeded to reach the state semifinals in the team tennis tournament.

Kotwica's team looks to be even better next season. His three stellar freshmen will have had another year of junior tennis under their belts. Bill Woods, coach of five-time champion Phoenix Brophy, said he expects Rincon to win the state title in two years.

2000 High School Girls Tennis All-Stars

Girls Player of the Year

Kendra Strohm, Salpointe

Strohm has hardly missed a beat since playing her first match for Salpointe last year as a freshman. Since then, she has dropped only one set and has won both 5A state singles titles.

The top-ranked 16-and-under tennis player in the USTA Southwest section, Strohm is on pace to become the first girl in Arizona history to win four singles championships.

Girls Coach of the Year

Kristie Stevens, Foothills

Stevens started the Foothills girls program eight years ago and in that time has had some of the best players in the city.

But this season, with the addition of 4A singles champ Hala Sufi and doubles runners-up Mara Frisch and Allison Dunn, all freshmen, the Falcons won their first-ever team state title.
