Get a handle on Wildcats tweet beat

  • Nov 4, 2014
  • Nov 4, 2014

This little birdie tells you who to follow on Twitter.

Get a handle on Wildcats tweet beat

Perhaps you’ve heard about “A Player’s Program.”

It has become the mantra of Arizona basketball. And we get it.

The 69 NBA draft picks.

The 30 conference championships, 25 All-Americans, 16 Sweet 16s, 10 Elite Eights.

Derrick Williams dunking the ball against Duke.

The four Final Fours.

The one national championship.

Dramatic music. Flash of Arizona legends: Steve Kerr, Lute Olson, etc.

Then Sean Miller. “This is ... (pause for effect) ... Arizona!” he says. Loud noises.

Oops, sorry, that’s the intro video. Really gets you going though, doesn’t it?

Anyway, the phrase “A Player’s Program” has become Arizona’s identity, particularly on social media. Almost to the point where it’s no longer called “Arizona Basketball.” At least not on Twitter.

When the account tweets a score, it’s “#APlayersProgram 70, Some Other School 59.” That’s not a direct quote/tweet, or even a real score, but you get the point.

Twitter has become a big part of Arizona basketball, and keeping with that theme, we decided to give you the 20 best follows on Twitter this basketball season, in no particular order.

This list doesn’t include the Star staff you need to follow: columnist Greg Hansen (@ghansen711), reporters Bruce Pascoe (@BrucePascoe) and Jon Gold (@TheCoolSub), photographers Kelly Presnell (@KellyPresnell), Mike Christy (@wildcatphotog) and Mamta Popat (@MamtaPopat). Plus, of course, yours truly — @ZackBlatt.

1. @APlayersProgram

1. @APlayersProgram:

Read above. Arizona’s official basketball account.

2. @UACoachMiller (Sean Miller)

2. @UACoachMiller (Sean Miller):

He actually tweets quite a bit, sometimes with an opinion, but mostly things about his team, former Wildcats or Pittsburgh-related things.

3. @FakeSeanMiller

3. @FakeSeanMiller:

It’s not quite Fake RichRod, but it’s funny.

4. @Greg_Byrne

4. @Greg_Byrne:

He’s the king of tweeting athletic directors.

5. @RondaeHJ23

5. @RondaeHJ23 (Rondae Hollis-Jefferson):

Arizona’s Mr. Personality. He is so on Twitter, too.

6. @StanMan_5

6. @StanMan_5 (Stanley Johnson):

He’s 18, although he looks a lot scarier (6 foot 7, 245 pounds). He’s also a nice dude, and funny, with an obsession for shoes.

7. @iPass4Zona

7. @iPass4Zona

(T.J. McConnell):

For having the most clever Twitter handle of them all, McConnell — No. 4 — wins the day.

8. @_Zona12

8. @_Zona12 (Ryan Anderson):

You won’t see the Boston College transfer on the court this season, but he’s hilarious on Twitter.

9. @York_City1, @PGUPark3, @Ejp_22, @JacobHazzard, @TreyBall3

9. @York_City1 (Gabe York), @PGUPark3 (Parker Jackson-Cartwright), @Ejp_22 (Elliott Pitts), @JacobHazzard (Jacob Hazzard) and @TreyBall3 (Trey Mason):

Every player on the Wildcats roster has a Twitter handle. We’re not going to list all of them. These are the best follows we haven’t mentioned already.

10. @iRocket3, @IAmAaronGordon

10. @iRocket3 (Nick Johnson) and @IAmAaronGordon (Aaron Gordon):

We liked Nick better when he was @AirZona. Both guys led Arizona to the Elite Eight in 2014, so follow them in the NBA as Gordon plays for the Magic, Johnson the Rockets.

11. @SteveKerr

11. @SteveKerr

(Steve Kerr):

The man just donated $1 million to the athletic department. He earned it.

12. @andre

12. @andre

(Andre Iguodala):

The Golden State Warrior, now playing for the head coach Kerr and assistant Luke Walton, is probably the funniest ex-Wildcat on Twitter. His biggest rival for that title is…

13. @Channing_Frye

13. @Channing_Frye (Channing Frye):

He’s in Orlando with Gordon, too.

14. @JasonTerry31

14. @JasonTerry31 (Jason Terry):

The JET is big on pictures, often flashback, and occasionally to his days at Arizona. He’s in Houston with Johnson, too.

15. @Iso_Zo

15. @Iso_Zo (Allonzo Trier), @raysmith2297 (Ray Smith), @Simon_says_so (Justin Simon), @comanche2414 (Chance Comanche):

Miller’s four-man 2015 recruiting class, rated top 5 in the nation.

16. @YoungIvee

16. @YoungIvee (Ivan Rabb), @BIGG_ZIMM (Stephen Zimmerman Jr.), @Biggs_Swanigan (Caleb Swanigan):

The three five-star 2015 big men Miller is still pursuing. Follow them; they might tweet their decision.

17. @DraftExpress, @MikeSchmitz:

17. @DraftExpress (Jonathan Givony) and @MikeSchmitz:

The leaders in online NBA draft evaluation. With so many Arizona players potentially leaving for the pros next year, these guys are must-follows. They frequently post scouting videos and player analysis, often detailing UA players’ pro prospects. Plus, Schmitz is an Arizona grad.

18. @ZonaZooOfficial

18. @ZonaZooOfficial:

The official Twitter for the official student fan base of the University of Arizona. Officially.

19. @CoachButts

19. @CoachButts (Niya Butts):

This isn’t all about the men. The women’s head coach is, easily, one of the best personalities on campus.

20. @NotBillWalton:

20. @NotBillWalton:

Technically has no connection to Arizona basketball. But, the real Bill Walton (@BillWalton) does announce a couple Wildcats games per year. That Walton doesn’t tweet. This one does. And he’s hilarious. Like the real one. THROW IT DOWN, YOUNG TWEETER!
