2020 NFL Draft preview: Who are the top cornerbacks and safeties?

From the Everything you need to know for the 2020 NFL Draft series
  • By Eddie Brown, The San Diego Union-Tribune
  • Apr 18, 2020
  • Apr 18, 2020 Updated Apr 23, 2020

In the modern era, defensive backs are essential to slow the opponents passing game. Who are the top cornerbacks and safeties in the 2020 NFL Draft? Find out.

First up, Eddie Brown, a sports writer for the The San Diego Union-Tribune who has covered the NFL Draft for over a decade looks at cornerbacks.

1. Jeff Okudah (Jr., Ohio St., 6-foot-1, 205 pounds)

1. Jeff Okudah (Jr., Ohio St., 6-foot-1, 205 pounds)

The Buckeyes continue to churn out NFL-worthy corners, but none of them were unanimous All-Americans like Okudah. Projected: Top 10

Paul Sancya

2. C.J. Henderson (Jr., Florida, 6-1, 204)

2. C.J. Henderson (Jr., Florida, 6-1, 204)

Quarterbacks avoided this three-year starter with shutdown capabilities. Henderson's weak tackling is overblown. Projected: 1st round

Jeff Roberson

3. Jeff Gladney (Sr., TCU, 5-10, 191)

3. Jeff Gladney (Sr., TCU, 5-10, 191)

Physical press corner with elite athleticism and ball skills. Projected: 1st or 2nd round

AJ Mast

4. Jaylon Johnson (Jr., Utah, 6-0, 193)

4. Jaylon Johnson (Jr., Utah, 6-0, 193)

Johnson's skill-set is perfect for press-man and he's versatile enough to play inside or outside. Has had three shoulder surgeries dating back to his senior year of high school. Projected: 1st or 2nd round

Charlie Neibergall

5. Noah Igbinoghene (Jr., Auburn, 5-10, 198)

5. Noah Igbinoghene (Jr., Auburn, 5-10, 198)

The son of world class track athletes (his mother Faith won bronze at the 1992 Summer Olympics) is merely scratching the surface, but there is immense talent to be mined here. Igbinoghene could be an impact kick returner as well (he averaged 31.4 yards per return in college). Projected: 1st or 2nd round

Vasha Hunt

6. Bryce Hall (Sr., Virginia, 6-1, 202)

6. Bryce Hall (Sr., Virginia, 6-1, 202)

Was almost an exclusive all-state (Pennsylvania) wide receiver in high school, which explains his elite ball skills. Hall was a team captain who missed half his senior season with an ankle injury that required surgery. Projected: 2nd to 4th round

Lynne Sladky

7. Kristian Fulton (Sr., LSU, 6-0, 197)

7. Kristian Fulton (Sr., LSU, 6-0, 197)

Former five-star recruit who is capable of playing press-man outside on in the slot. His inconsistent technique as a tackler leads to misses. Projected: 1st or 2nd round

Tyler Kaufman

8. Trevon Diggs (Sr., Alabama, 6-1, 205)

8. Trevon Diggs (Sr., Alabama, 6-1, 205)

Elite size, instincts and athleticism, but he needs to clean up his technique to reach full potential. Projected: 1st or 2nd round

Richard Shiro

9. A.J. Terrell (Jr., Clemson, 6-1, 195)

9. A.J. Terrell (Jr., Clemson, 6-1, 195)

Struggles against LSU in the national title game dimmed his draft stock a bit, but this fierce competitor bounced back at the combine in Indy. Projected: 1st or 2nd round

David J. Phillip

10. Damon Arnette (Sr., Ohio St., 6-0, 195)

10. Damon Arnette (Sr., Ohio St., 6-0, 195)

Significant growth after returning for his senior season. Arnette isn't a burner, but he's athletic enough to hold his own in man-to-man at the next level. Projected: 2nd or 3rd round

Rick Scuteri

Best of the rest

Troy Pride Jr. (Sr., Notre Dame, 5-11, 193)

Pride is a plus athlete with sprinter speed which he relies upon to cover up his undeveloped technique. Projected: 3rd or 4th round

Cameron Dantzler (Jr., Mississippi St., 6-2, 188)

Size and lack of elite speed may force move to safety. Dantzler is a good tackler with aggressive tendencies in coverage. Projected: 3rd to 5th round

Javelin Guidry (Jr., Utah, 5-9, 191)

Size is an issue, but Guidry is FAST (he was 100-meter champion in both Texas and California during an illustrious high school track career). He could shine in some sort of hybrid nickel role. Projected: 4th to 7th round

Lamar Jackson (Sr., Nebraska, 6-2, 208)

Jackson's best traits are his physicality and size. He has a strong man-to-man skills, but lacks elite speed. Projected: 5th round to UFA

Stanford Samuels III (Jr., Florida St., 6-1, 187)

Samuels is a physical bump-and-run corner with solid ball skills (eight interceptions in 24 starts) and decent quickness. Projected: 6th round to UFA

Safeties:

1. Antoine Winfield Jr. (So., Minnesota, 5-foot-9, 203 pounds)

1. Antoine Winfield Jr. (So., Minnesota, 5-foot-9, 203 pounds)

A chip off the ol' block (his father was a pro bowler), Winfield is an opportunistic playmaker with elite ball skills and a high football IQ. Only three FBS players had more than his seven interceptions in 2019. Projected: 1st or 2nd round

Stacy Bengs

2. Xavier McKinney (Jr., Alabama, 6-0, 201)

2. Xavier McKinney (Jr., Alabama, 6-0, 201)

McKinney is an alpha playmaker who can handle every position in the defensive backfield. Projected: 1st or 2nd round

Vasha Hunt

3. Grant Delpit (Jr., LSU, 6-2, 213)

3. Grant Delpit (Jr., LSU, 6-2, 213)

Delpit won the 2019 Thorpe Award (nation's top defensive back) on reputation alone. Various injuries clearly hindered his play last season. There's All-Pro potential if he returns to his 2018 form. Projected: 1st or 2nd round

David J. Phillip

4. Ashtyn Davis (Sr., California, 6-1, 202)

4. Ashtyn Davis (Sr., California, 6-1, 202)

The rare dual-sport walk-on in college (football and track), Davis is fearless and relentless on the football field. He'll have to control his overaggressive nature in the NFL. Projected: 2nd or 3rd round

Rick Bowmer

5. Kyle Dugger (Sr., Lenoir-Rhyne, 6-1, 217)

5. Kyle Dugger (Sr., Lenoir-Rhyne, 6-1, 217)

Dugger won the 2019 Cliff Harris Award (the Division II Defensive Player of the Year). He averaged 13.9 yards per punt return with six touchdowns during his collegiate career. Projected: 2nd or 3rd round

Butch Dill

6. Jeremy Chinn (Sr., Southern Illinois, 6-3, 221)

6. Jeremy Chinn (Sr., Southern Illinois, 6-3, 221)

Chinn is a poor man's Isaiah Simmons. His uncle is Hall of Fame safety Steve Atwater. Projected: 2nd or 3rd round

Charlie Neibergall

7. Terrell Burgess (Sr., Utah, 5-11, 202)

7. Terrell Burgess (Sr., Utah, 5-11, 202)

The San Marcos native has a nose for the ball and the range to handle all of his coverage responsibilities. Burgess could be a core special teamer early. Projected: 3rd or 4th round

Kyusung Gong

8. Antoine Brooks Jr. (Sr., Maryland, 5-11, 220)

8. Antoine Brooks Jr. (Sr., Maryland, 5-11, 220)

Brooks is a thumper in run support and will carry special teams value. Projected: 3rd to 5th round

Butch Dill

9. J.R. Reed (Sr., Georgia, 6-1, 202)

9. J.R. Reed (Sr., Georgia, 6-1, 202)

NFL pedigree (father is former Viking receiver Jake Reed; uncle is former Chiefs cornerback Dale Carter) and finalist for the 2019 Thorpe Award. Projected: 3rd to 5th round

John Amis

10. Brandon Jones (Sr., Texas, 5-11, 198)

10. Brandon Jones (Sr., Texas, 5-11, 198)

Jones lacks ideal size, but he wins with athleticism and toughness and can play both safety positions. Projected: 3rd to 5th round

Chuck Burton

Best of the Rest

Alohi Gilman (Jr., Notre Dame, 5-10, 201)

Gilman is more effective closer to the line of scrimmage. He set a Notre Dame single-game record with 19 tackles as a sophomore (vs. Clemson). Projected: 4th to 6th round

Julian Blackmon (Sr., Utah, 6-0, 187)

Blackmon excelled at both cornerback (four interceptions in 2017) and strong safety (four interceptions in 2019) for the Utes. Projected: 5th to 7th round

L'Jarius Sneed (Sr., Louisiana Tech, 6-0, 192)

Sneed returned at least one interception for a touchdown in three of his four seasons. No FBS player had more over that time period. Projected: 5th to 7th round

K'Von Wallace (Sr., Clemson, 5-11, 206)

Wallace is a three-year starter (and team captain) who is built like a cornerback, but plays like a safety with elite awareness. Projected: 5th to 7th round
