Conductor Adam Boyles is leaving the Southern Arizona Symphony Orchestra this fall to take over the Massachusetts Institute of Technology orchestra.
"It's something that's very exciting but bittersweet," Boyles said Tuesday. "I felt like we were just starting to kick things in high gear."
Boyles, 27, has led the volunteer orchestra for two seasons to positive reviews. His players have often praised his leadership and his energy.
But Boyles said he needed a job that paid more than the $7,500 a year he receives from SASO.
In addition to leading the MIT orchestra, which is made up of music majors and engineering students alike, Boyles will teach classes, including score reading and conducting.
The MIT orchestra has been around off and on since 1884. In the 1940s, it became more stable. In the past decade, the orchestra has even performed abroad, Boyles said.
