Sir Veza’s rolls out
new menu, specials
Sir Veza’s Taco Garage picked National Taco Day last Friday to introduce its new $8 weekday lunch menu and new items to its regular menu.
The restaurant also is putting renewed emphasis on its weekend breakfast menu of tacos, burritos and bowls, available 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, said Sir Veza’s owner Ray Flores.
Among the new items on the regular menu: handmade corn tortillas; ahi poke tostada sliders with crisp won tons; pretzel bombs with a queso dip alongside mustard; seared ahi tostada drizzled with a ginger lime dressing; chopped margarita salad topped with choice of chicken, grilled salmon or carne asada; a green chile and chicken stew; and a barbecue pork ribs and carnitas combo sided with a jalapeño slaw.

The $8 lunch menu includes chicken enchiladas, barbecue pulled pork carnitas quesadilla, taco plates and a trio of lighter-calorie fare including a margarita shrimp tostada.
“We’re happy with how we’re doing, but we are never going to rest on our laurels,” said Flores, whose family owns El Charro. “It was just time to do a refreshing of the menu as we get ready to expand.”

Chili cook-off will aid kids camp program
This Saturday’s Fun Chili Cook-Off at Jonathan’s Cork, 6320 E. Tanque Verde Road, will help send local boys and girls to summer camp through the Arizona Daily Star’s Sportsmen’s Fund Send a Kid to Camp program.
Local restaurants will donate their best chili for the public to sample and judge from noon to 2 p.m. or until the last spoonful is eaten. It’s a $10 donation at the door.
Restaurants participating include defending 2012 champion Jonathan’s Cork and 2010 winner Brushfire BBQ Co. as well as Dakota Cafe, Eclectic Cafe, Hog Pit Smokehouse, Kingfisher, Pastiche Modern Eatery, Mother Hubbard’s Café, Nimbus American Bistro & Brewery and Rocco’s Little Chicago, all part of the Tucson Originals group of local eateries.
A flat-screen TV donated by Tucson Appliance Co. is one of several dozen raffle prizes.
To date the chili cook-off has raised more than $75,000 for the Sportsmen’s Fund Send a Kid to Camp program.
The Send a Kid to Camp program raises money so economically disadvantaged kids can go to YMCA, Boy Scout and Girl Scout camps and to the Camp Courage burn camp.

Miguel’s at La Posada is now Gringo Grill
Miguel’s at La Posada quietly transitioned into the Gringo Grill + Cantina last month.
The new concept, at 5900 N. Oracle Road, sports “Southwest cuisine with a Spanish influence” according to general manager Raul Hernandez.
Menu items include carnitas sliders, braised short ribs in a chipotle sauce and a Sonoran burger, a half-pound burger covered in mesquite bacon, cured tomatoes, shaved onions, beans, crème and jalapeño jam on a bolillo roll.
Hernandez said it is chef Scott Rackliff’s take on the traditional Sonoran hot dog.
Gringo Grill + Cantina is open 3 p.m.-10 p.m. Mondays-Thursdays and 3 p.m.-midnight Fridays-Saturdays.

Real German cooking and live entertainment
Cafe Passe owner Sabine Blaese was inspired by her mother’s recipes when she introduced Oktoberfest on North Fourth Avenue a couple of years ago.
This year, Blaese’s mother and father, Emmi and Gerhard, have traveled from Germany to help her prepare and celebrate.
The family has been preparing for the past week. Her mother has improved on the sauerkraut and the potato salad, Sabine Blaese says, promising that both will be incredible this year.
Plates will average about $8 to $10.
There will also be music by the Bouncing Czechs, and Jimmy Carr and the Awkward Moments.
The festivities will take place at Cafe Passe, 415 N. Fourth Ave., from noon-10 p.m. Friday and Saturday; noon-6 p.m. Sunday; noon-10 p.m. Oct. 18-19; and noon-6 p.m. Oct. 20. More information at 624-4411.
