5 Tucson restaurants we think Bernie Sanders will visit

  • Mar 17, 2016
  • Mar 17, 2016 Updated Apr 8, 2016

Will he stick to a salad or feel the Bern with some spicy Mexican food?

You don't have to be a millionaire or a billionaire to eat out

Inquiring minds want to know ... When Bernie Sanders comes to Tucson Friday night, what's he gonna put in his mouth?

Unlike the other presidential candidates — Trump with his overcooked steak and Hillary with her slices of raw jalapeño that she eats like potato chips — Bernie doesn't really make food a big priority on the campaign. He's down to business, you know?

But everyone's gotta eat. And a guy can only pack so many snacks before he runs out of food. (Especially if he doesn't even own a backpack!) If Bernie's driving down from Flagstaff that day, he's probably gonna need some grub by the time he gets to town.

Here's what we know: 1. From the dairy state of Vermont, Bernie is a known cheese lover and a big proponent of the raw milk variety. 2. Bernie also likes Phish, but we're not sure if he likes fish. 3. He's Jewish, so if he's anything like my family members, he's a huge foodie, and 4. He's probably not going to Mi Nidito this time around.

So without further ado, here are my 5 predictions on where he'll go ...

To win over new voters: BK Carne Asada and Hot Dogs

We all know Bernie needs the Hispanic vote to win this race. And what local Mexican restaurant is more universally loved than BK? (We love you too El Güero Canelo, but we think Bernie should chill out with a michelada before his speech.) Also, if he's really a man of the people, he's gotta be able to take down a Sonoran hot dog.

To connect with his base: Rigo's

This southside restaurant Rigo's is a well known political hangout for Democrats, and has hosted Rep. Raúl Grijalva, Pima County Supervisor Richard Elías, and even former governor Janet Napolitano. It's got big portions at a low price point for the 99 percent. Plus, they've got a buffet!

To please himself: PY Steakhouse at Casino del Sol

Bernie is apparently a big meat eater. (His stepdaughter told People Magazine "he was Paleo before Paleo was a thing.") But since he's a liberal, he's gonna want something sustainable. We suggest PY Steakhouse. The gourmet restaurant recently brought on chef Ryan Clark, who's known to cultivate relationships with local farms including E & R pork (for Bernie's favorite pork chops). And then after dinner, Bernie can try his luck at the slots!

To embrace his inner hippie: The Tasteful Kitchen

How do you help the local economy and take care of the planet at the same time? Enjoy a vegan meal at The Tasteful Kitchen on Stone Avenue. The food is so fresh and light, Bernie can eat ten courses and still feel good enough to start a political revolution.

What he actually has time for: Brooklyn Pizza

The campaign trail is a grueling slog of greasy hamburgers and takeout pizza. If Bernie wants to feed all his staffers before his Tucson Convention Center speech at 7:30, he's gotta get something quick and close. Since Bernie's a true Brooklyn boy, we're placing our bets on a cheesy slice at Brooklyn Pizza Company. It's cheap, easy, and has solar electricity!
